In an example of the challenges water-strapped Western cities will face in a warming world, new research shows that every degree Fahrenheit of warming in the Salt Lake City region could mean a 1.8 to 6.5 percent drop in the annual flow of streams that provide water to the city.

Seven University of 欧美口爆视频 Boulder faculty and staff have received Fulbright grants to pursue research, teaching and training abroad during the 2013-14 academic year. One of their proposed projects involves research in India on the use of the tanbura -- a long-necked stringed instrument -- as an aid for developing musical perception and intonation. A NASA spacecraft that will examine the upper atmosphere of Mars in unprecedented detail is undergoing final preparations for a scheduled 1:28 p.m. EST Monday, Nov. 18 launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution mission, or MAVEN, led by the University of 欧美口爆视频 Boulder will examine specific processes on Mars that led to the loss of much of its atmosphere. Data and analysis could tell planetary scientists the history of climate change on the red planet and provide further information on planetary habitability.

Engineering students at the University of 欧美口爆视频 Boulder will host the annual College Egg Drop competition Oct. 18 as part of Engineering Days. 鈥淓-Days鈥� is an annual tradition during which students celebrate the engineering profession with fun and challenging competitions and social events. The event is organized by the University of 欧美口爆视频 Engineering Council (UCEC) and various student honor societies. The egg drop, which starts at 1 p.m. on the west side of the Engineering Center, challenges students to create a contraption that will protect a raw egg when dropped from the eighth floor of the Engineering Center鈥檚 office tower.

The University of 欧美口爆视频 Boulder will host a conference that explores the phenomenon of slavery from a global, historical perspective on Sept. 27-28. The event will include scholars specializing in the study of slavery in ancient, medieval and modern contexts and in global regions that include Western, pre-Columbian, African, Asian and Muslim. Titled 鈥淲hat is a Slave Society: an International Conference on the Nature of Slavery as a Global Historical Phenomenon,鈥� the event will be held in the British and Irish Studies room of Norlin Library.

A panel of science experts will convene at the University of 欧美口爆视频 Boulder on Wednesday, Sept. 25, to discuss weather and climate related to the recent devastating floods.
