Ray Chávez, faculty member at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder, has been named the 1999 recipient of the Barry Bingham Sr. Fellowship from the National Conference of Editorial Writers Foundation. The fellowship is presented annually to a journalism educator committed to preparing minority students for successful careers in journalism.

The University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ Student Union Tri-executives will deliver the first State of the Student Union Address before a special meeting of the UCSU legislative council on Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. in the University Memorial Center, room 235. The speech, which is open to all members of the Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ-Boulder community, will address such topics as financial aid, state funding, and the condition of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ's student-funded organizations which include the UMC, Wardenburg Health Center and Student Recreation Center.

The University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder will participate this fall in MentorNet, an innovative electronic mentoring service for women pursuing careers in engineering and the sciences. The nonprofit program, founded in spring 1998, is believed to be the first of its kind offered nationwide. During this past school year, MentorNet linked 539 female engineering and science majors from 26 U.S. universities with volunteer mentors working in private industry. The number of students served is expected to grow to several thousand over the next few years.

The University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder is being featured the week of Sept. 20 in the "On-Campus" section of the Science Coalition Web site, a comprehensive resource for information on federally funded research.

The Women in Engineering Program at the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder has scheduled two Engineering Career Days for High School Women this academic year. The all-day programs on Tuesday, Oct. 5, and Saturday, March 4, will introduce ninth through 12th grade women to the field of engineering and engage them in hands-on demonstrations and activities. Participants also will hear from professional women engineers and meet current engineering students.

Enrollment at the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder has hit an all-time high for degree-seeking students this fall with a total enrollment of 25,656 or 582 more than fall 1998 for an increase of 2.3 percent. And for the first time, final total enrollment figures will include both degree-seeking and non-degree students for a total of 26,318. Formerly, non-degree students were counted through the Division of Continuing Education. The change "brings Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ-Boulder in line with many other schools," said Barbara Schneider, interim executive director of enrollment management.

Mary Chavez Rudolph, who graduated from the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder with a bachelor's degree in psychology in the early 1980s, is returning to the university as interim associate ombudsperson. Starting Sept. 13 she will work in the Ombuds Office on the Boulder, campus which assists faculty, staff, students and administrators in resolving and managing conflicts, disputes and complaints.

The University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder and the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Denver will sponsor a lecture on "The EU and European Monetary Union" by Christian Schneider on Sept. 30 at 3:30 p.m. The lecture will be held at the University Memorial Center, room 235, on the Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ-Boulder campus and is free and open to the public. Schneider is associate director of the Center for Human Resources at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, which is renowned worldwide for its programs in international industrial relations and multinational human resource management.

The University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder's Department of Housing will hold its annual "Global Jam: A Celebration of Diversity" on Sept. 23 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Farrand Field. Global Jam is an annual diversity program, organized by the Housing Department, that showcases ethnic foods and music from people and places around the world. This year's menu consists of food from the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, the Mississippi Delta and various parts of Africa. Meals are planned and prepared by the department's dining services.
