The Research & Innovation Office (RIO) outlines the procedures and criteria it uses in evaluating clinical faculty for appointment, reappointment, and promotion within the Institutes.

Procedures and Standards for Appointment of Clinical Faculty

Clinical faculty members are appointed under the clinical series job titles in APS 5060 (Appendix A: Faculty Titles, section B.3 Clinical Series). These appointments are made in accordance with procedures under Instructional, Research and Clinical (IRC) Faculty. Refer to:

  • IRC faculty will generally focus their activities on one primary mission of the university. Appointment of faculty members to a specific series and track is based on their primary area of responsibility. For promotion within a track, faculty members must demonstrate excellence in their primary area of responsibility.听

IRC faculty members are employees at-will (see鈥).听Clinical care appointments (see C.R.S. 搂 24-19-108(1)(b)) 1. As outlined by C.R.S. 搂 24-19-108: 鈥溾ny specialty track faculty member whose primary job assignment is clinical care and who is employed at a state institution of higher education...鈥 is subject to a statutory exception regarding length of appointment. 2. Based on this exception, Clinical Series faculty whose primary job assignment is clinical care do not have a statutory limitation on their employment agreement. Primary job assignment is construed to mean at least 50% of their FTE appointment. These faculty may have at-will, limited, or indeterminate employment agreements." Clinical Professor Series

鈥婥linical faculty titles are meant for faculty working in healthcare education, clinical or public health practice, or a healthcare or health sciences setting. The Clinical series includes the Clinical Teaching (C/T) Track (50% FTE or more), the Clinical Practice Track (AMC and UCCS only) and the Clinical Track. For the Research Institutes, we will only use the Clinical Track.听For details on the Clinical Teaching Track or Clinical Practice Track, refer to:.

鈥婥linical Track

鈥婥linical faculty members are practitioners or other professionals who provide clinical care or engage in public health practice, teaching or research on a part-time (less than 0.5 FTE) or volunteer basis. Those who provide clinical care and maintain an independent healthcare practice must carry their own malpractice insurance, which covers their university work and private practice. Clinical faculty are expected to demonstrate continued professional growth in their fields. Each school with clinical faculty titles may have additional requirements for faculty holding those titles.听听

Definition of Clinic

Clinic is referred to in APS 5060 as a 鈥渉ealthcare or health sciences setting.鈥 It also includes 鈥渆ducation鈥 and 鈥減ublic health practice鈥 in its discussions of clinics. Per APS 5060 language: a clinic is a public-facing organization that offers services and care to clients/patients while also providing experiential learning opportunities for students working in the clinic鈥檚 setting. Examples of clinics may include law clinics and specialized healthcare clinics.听听

For example: The Crown Institute Clinic offers services that promote the mental health and wellness of young people and the adults who support them. The Clinic offers these services at no charge to members of the community including youth, educators, and families and is operated by the Ren茅e Crown Wellness Institute at the University of 欧美口爆视频 Boulder. It is staffed by undergraduate and graduate students who, as part of on-site training, work under the supervision of Crown Institute faculty including licensed psychologists and social workers, licensed faculty, and community members. Through training and supervision, students learn how to apply research and theory to practice. The clinic faculty may also provide direct services and consultation to research and educational teams within the Crown Institute that face unique challenges that arise in the context of research and practice, including but not limited to: responding to emergencies, navigating barriers to care, referrals to other higher acuity providers, navigating how institutional and structural inequality shows up in practice settings in ways that might impact the implementation of research, and bringing knowledge of evidence based practices.听 The clinic is a non-profit clinic focused on serving clients and families: all people will be provided clinical services without discrimination according to race, color, national origin, pregnancy, sex, age, disability, creed, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, veteran (military service) status, marital status, political affiliation or political philosophy.听

Standards for appointment

欧美口爆视频 Boulder charges primary units [to] establish written criteria for successful reappointment, which should include criteria for teaching or librarianship and other duties performed by instructor-track or clinical faculty in the unit. The components of an individual鈥檚 evaluation (e.g., teaching, librarianship, service, or clinical duties) are defined by the annual merit formula in the initial letter of appointment. (Titles 8.a.1)听

Clinical Faculty, regardless of level of appointment, must hold the terminal degree or its equivalent in their field discipline, and have at least 3 years of full-time or 3 years FTE equivalent experience providing clinical services and clinical expertise appropriate to the area of responsibilities.听

Terms of appointment and eligibility for reappointment: At-will employment

(1) All Clinical Faculty are deemed employees-at-will whose appointments are subject to termination by either party at any time during its term.听

(2) There is no limit to the number of times that a Clinical Faculty member may be reappointed. However, any Clinical Faculty member鈥檚 reappointment for an additional term does not change the nature of the Clinical Faculty member鈥檚 at-will employment status, which remains subject to termination by either party at any time during its term.

(3) No compensation, whether as a buyout of the remaining term of the appointment, or as any other form of remuneration, shall be owed or paid to a Clinical Faculty member upon or after termination of such appointment except for compensation that was earned prior to the date of termination.

(4) All Clinical Professor appointments are 12-month positions renewable every 5 years. 听

(5) Under these guidelines, all Clinical Faculty are required to have a terminal degree or its equivalent in the relevant field/discipline.听

Job codes

The Clinical Professor series appointments are less than 50% FTE (1201-1205). This is reflected in the most recent听.听

Procedures and Standards for Reappointment and Promotion of Clinical Faculty

Clinical faculty members eligible for promotion and wishing to be considered should ask the Institute Director to be considered for promotion. Institutes will follow their own internal process for promotion, voting, etc. The clinical faculty member should collect and create materials to be included in the reappointment/promotion dossier.听

听Checklist for Reappointment and Promotion of Clinical Faculty

The unit evaluation committee is responsible for assisting the candidate in assembling their dossier, soliciting letters of support from internal and external reviewers. A summary will be prepared by the evaluation committee and included in the dossier. Processes for nomination, renewal and promotion should follow internal institute or unit processes.听

To help secure an impartial evaluation, faculty members who write supporting letters for a promotion candidate should not also serve on the evaluation committee (if possible).听

An important early step will be to determine the faculty member鈥檚 annual merit formula, e.g., 85% clinical work/15% service.

RIO review process

Appointments may be submitted to RIO throughout the calendar year. Once reviewed by a committee made of appropriate faculty (this could be a committee of Clinical Faculty from AMC or 欧美口爆视频 Boulder), a recommendation is sent to the Senior Vice Chancellor for Research & Innovation and Dean of the Institutes for approval, and an appointment confirmation letter will be sent to the unit. RIO will review offer letters and addendum letters before they are routed for signature. It is the responsibility of the unit to track appointment end dates and any other changes.听听

Evaluation of Clinical Faculty

The Reappointment/Promotion Criteria Matrix is adapted from the 欧美口爆视频 Anschutz Promotion Criteria for Clinical Faculty and the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Services. It is intended to present examples of various levels of accomplishment in the areas of Clinical track appointments. It is not an exhaustive list, but is intended to assist faculty, department chairs and promotion committees in matching candidates鈥 accomplishments to the promotion criteria. Importantly, faculty members are not expected to have accomplishments in all areas. Rather, the matrix highlights a broad range of activities that will be recognized as 鈥渕eritorious鈥 or 鈥渆xcellent,鈥 reflecting the varied activities and accomplishments of our diverse faculty.听

Each institute will develop guidelines for evaluation of clinical faculty based on other faculty reviews and the specific nature of the clinical faculty work.

Annual performance reviews and the timing and processes for reviews for appointment and promotion in the clinical professor series are identical to the review and approval processes as research faculty. 听

Faculty members in the Clinical Professor Series are not eligible for tenure.听
