Research
We are interested in the both the theory and practice of taxonomy, systematics, and biogeography. We also are interested in the use of diatoms to study freshwaters, especially water quality. Current research projects focus on applying understanding of phylogeny to the development of classification systems.
We are also involved in the taxonomy and systematics of freshwater diatoms, including gomphonemoid diatoms,ÌýFrustuliaÌýand its allies,ÌýKobayasiella, EunotiaÌý²¹²Ô»åÌýBrachysira, as well asRhoicospheniaÌý²¹²Ô»åÌýStauroneis. Florisitic projects include areas of India, China, and Brasil, as well as Glacier National Park, western lakes, California, and Grand Mesa, Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ. Ecological research is based on the diatoms of the southern California Bight.
