A DC-DC step-down power conversion architecture
Problem
As mobile devices such as smartphones, wearable devices, and tablet computers have been widespread and their complexity has been steadily increasing to accomodate more functionalities in limited space, there is a clear need for more efficient integrated regulators with minimal thermal issues that can charge batteries and supply power to a variety of processors and sub-blocks.
Solution
An invention by Dr. Hanh-Phuc Le provides methods and circuits of a smart cable that allows use of parasitic inductances available in any cable that has at least two wires for power connection in order to provide both power connection and power conversion capabilities. The disclosed methods and circuits can be applied to today鈥檚 switching regulators and allow them to provide the same power conversion function with less passive components, thereby reducing implementation space, decrease costs, and improve efficiency with less heat loss.
Market Application
Applications of the invention can be (1) smart USB cables and (2) smart power cables in computer systems such as data centers that can provide a power delivery function including both power connectivity and power conversion. Licensing opportunities exist for established companies with global distribution channels.
