Isabel Wilkerson (photo by Leslie Andrews)

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and critically acclaimed nonfiction writer Isabel Wilkerson will deliver the keynote address at 欧美口爆视频 Boulder's Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation 2025. Wilkerson is the author of the bestsellers 鈥淐aste: The Origins of Our Discontents鈥 and 鈥淭he Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America鈥檚 Great Migration.鈥

The campus convocation will take place 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 16 at Macky Auditorium and is free and open to students, staff, faculty and members of the local community. A registration link and additional information are available on the convocation webpage. Students, staff and faculty are encouraged to register early to ensure seating before registration closes on Jan. 2. The first 100 students registered will receive a free copy of "Caste" at event check-in.

Wilkerson鈥檚 鈥淭he Warmth of Other Suns鈥 won the National Book Critics Circle Award for nonfiction, was among Time magazine鈥檚 10 best nonfiction books of the 2010s, and was on The New York Times magazine鈥檚 list of the best nonfiction books of all time. Her critically acclaimed book 鈥淐aste鈥 inspired the biographical drama 鈥淥rigin.鈥 Following her keynote address, Wilkerson will answer questions and sign copies of her books.

David Humphrey, assistant vice chancellor for diversity, equity and inclusion, said the convocation would aim to address important questions Wilkerson posed in 鈥淐aste,鈥 including: 鈥淗ow do castes continually empower themselves across the boundaries of time and space, and what might it look like to disrupt these patterns?鈥

鈥淥ur goal,鈥 Humphrey said, 鈥渋s to illuminate the nuanced ways in which global themes of power and intersectional solidarity have informed the drumbeat of justice that underpins both present-day and historical freedom movements. Now more than ever, we must become students of history or we will be destined to repeat it.鈥

  MLK Day holiday

  • The state and federal Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday falls on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, and like most public schools, institutions and government offices, 欧美口爆视频 Boulder will close for classes and most academic and administrative operations.
  • More information about the campus鈥檚 Jan. 16 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation 2025 is available on the event webpage.

The eponymous annual campus convocation honors King鈥檚 legacy and provides educational and community-building opportunities. The theme for the 2025 event is 鈥淔reedom Intersections,鈥 an exploration of the geneses of global freedom movements.

King, a Baptist minister, activist and political philosopher, was one of the country鈥檚 most influential and celebrated civil rights leaders. Before his murder in Memphis on April 4, 1968, he became the youngest man to win the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 35. His iconic and his continue to resonate today.

Leading up to and during the convocation, Humphrey said participants would be asked to consider within the present-day context a passage from the letter King wrote while he was jailed for leading nonviolent, anti-segregation demonstrations in Alabama in 1963.

The renowned passage is, 鈥淚njustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.鈥

Co-sponsors of the 2025 convocation include the Center for African and African American Studies, College of Engineering and Applied Science, Strategic Resources and Support, University Libraries, the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Front Range Community College.

Join on Jan. 16 to hear Isabel Wilkerson, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and bestselling author, speak at 欧美口爆视频 Boulder鈥檚 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation. The first 100 students to register will receive a free copy of Wilkerson's book 鈥滳aste.鈥

The Office of Academic and Learning Innovation is proud to present its second annual speaker series, BoulderTalks: Insights from Education Innovators. The series curates dynamic conversations with experts exploring groundbreaking innovations that are transforming and expanding the landscape of learning.

The 2024鈥25 series will feature three higher education professionals with expertise in online education, accessibility and the impact of artificial intelligence on higher education.

Yakut Gazi

Who: Open to the public
What: 鈥淭he Practical and Moral Imperative for At-Scale Learning鈥 by Yakut Gazi
When: Thursday, Nov. 21, 4 p.m.
Where: Norlin Library, Center for British and Irish Studies Room

To kick off the series this fall, 欧美口爆视频 Boulder welcomes learning innovation and education leader  to talk about the value of at-scale learning. Gazi will share insights on creating innovative online programs while aligning institutional mission, priorities, business and instructional models to expand the impact of institutions.

The challenges with the future of work and education are indeed issues of scale and inclusion, especially in a technology-driven post-COVID world. Higher education institutions have an opportunity, and arguably a social responsibility, to utilize effective digital learning and create partnerships for affordability, scale and impact to reach all corners of the globe.

A variety of innovative business and learning models developed within the last decade have already changed the equation for many institutions and learners. These institutions exemplify a relentless commitment to affordability and access that led to impact at scale. What is the next impactful innovation that will enable our institutions to touch many more learners beyond those that walk on our campuses?

Gazi is the vice provost for learning innovation and digital education at Duke University. She oversees the offices of Learning Innovation and Continuing Studies, with responsibility for the development and execution of pedagogical innovation and digital education strategies, youth academic enrichment programs, and continuing education and lifelong learning offerings. Her higher education experience spans almost 30 years in four countries. Gazi has her doctorate in educational psychology.

This in-person presentation, which is free and open to the public, will be hosted in the Center for British and Irish Studies Room in the Norlin Library. A recording will be available online after the event.

BoulderTalks will host two more presentations in the spring on topics related to accessibility in online education to advancements in artificial intelligence. We will publish more information about those presentations by our guest speakers in early 2025. Learn more information about BoulderTalks.

BoulderTalks is sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning, the , the  and the Office of the Registrar
