Ten new directors have been elected to head the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder Alumni Association. Boulderite Steve Taniguchi, class of 1976, was elected by the board to serve a two-year term as chair. Al Gebauer of Boulder, who earned degrees in 1968 and 1983, will serve a one-year term as treasurer. The 49-member board, representing more than 170,000 Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ-Boulder alumni, oversees association activities in Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ and nationally and internationally.

University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder fine arts instructor Patrick Frank will lecture June 28 on the Paul Strand photography exhibit on display at the Cortez Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ Center as part of the Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ This Summer outreach program. A reception at the center will begin at 7:30 p.m. followed by FrankÂ’s talk. The exhibit, “The Mexican Portfolio,” began May 24 and continues through Sept. 1 in the Cortez Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ Center, at 25 N. Market St. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Admission is free.

The offices of Disability Services and Career Services at the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder were the first runners-up for the Unique Career Fair Concept Merits NACE/Chevron Award for their project entry titled “Career Program for Students with Disabilities.” The two offices produced the project together to introduce students with disabilities to various employers.

More than 1,000 biologists from around the world will converge on the Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ-Boulder campus June 14-18 for the joint annual meetings of the American Society of Naturalists, the Society of Systematic Biologists and the Society for the Study of Evolution.

Joe Ben Wheat, curator emeritus of the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ Museum and an internationally known archaeologist, died today at St. Anthony Hospital South in Denver after a short illness. He was 81. Wheat, of Boulder, had worked at the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ Museum from 1953 until his retirement in 1986. He was a former president of the Society for American Archaeology. Wheat was an internationally known scholar and a prolific publisher of scholarly papers.

Professor Lucy Pao of the electrical and computer engineering department at the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder has received an Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award for research that may have applications in air traffic control, robotics and several other fields.

Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ-BoulderÂ’s new $11.5 million hands-on engineering facility, designed to provide real-world experience to more than 1,200 undergraduates during the academic year, will be used this summer by hundreds of K-12 students and teachers across the state.

Researchers at the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder are exploring chemical links between the brain and body that could lead to progress against a host of poorly understood diseases such as multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and AIDS.

NEWS TIP SHEET University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder economics Professor Keith Maskus will serve as a resource to reporters covering the Denver Summit of the Eight meetings June 20-22. His areas of expertise are international trade, trade theory and U.S. trade policy. Maskus served a year-long appointment in 1986-87 as a special adviser to the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. He conducted trade studies and advised upper-level department officials.

The Alumni Association of the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder will hold Reunion Fest '97 the weekend of June 20-22. Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ 400 alumni and families are expected to attend the weekend of events in Boulder for members of the graduating classes of 1987, 1982, 1977, 1972, 1967, 1962, 1957 and 1952. All Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ alumni and friends are encouraged to attend. The summer reunion offers everything from events at old campus “hangouts” to seminars on current topics and the Camp Ralphie for kids.
