NASA El NIÑO-WATCHING SATELLITE Four Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ institutions including the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder have teamed up on the construction, launch and control of a NASA satellite designed to observe EarthÂ’s oceans and act as an "El Niño watcher." Known as the Quick Scatterometer, or QuikScat, the satellite will provide daily, detailed snapshots of the winds swirling above the worldÂ’s oceans to improve weather forecasting, according to NASA officials.

The University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder summer blood drive will be held on June 22 from noon to 3:30 p.m. in Baur Lounge of the Farrand Residence Hall. Donors may sign up for an appointment by calling (303) 492-5473 through June 21 or may drop in the day of the blood drive. Donors should be in good health, weigh at least 110 pounds and not be in an at-risk behavior group. They should eat within four hours of donating blood and drink lots of fluids before and after donating.

Creativity Acting Camp For Children To Be Held June 27-July 2 In Westcliffe

The Crystal Mountain Center for the Performing Arts and Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ-Boulder's Summer Theatre Caravan will hold its third annual creativity camp for children ages 8-18 in Westcliffe the week of June 27-July 2. The classes will be held at the Jones Theatre, at 2nd and Main streets, under the instruction of two doctoral and four undergraduate Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ-Boulder theater students from the Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ Summer Theatre Caravan.

Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ-Boulder Workshop Lends Disadvantaged High School Students A Helping Hand

The University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder welcomes 40 students from the Denver metro area and New Mexico later this month for a four-day workshop entitled College Summit. More than half the students will come from George Washington, North and West High Schools in Denver to the Boulder campus June 24-27 to complete college admissions and financial aid applications.

The Summer Theatre Caravan from Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ-Boulder will perform the romantic comedy, "It Had To Be You," in five Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ communities from June 25 through July 15 as part of its summer outreach program. The Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ Summer Theatre Caravan has been performing and holding acting workshops across Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ since the summer of 1997 to foster the performing arts in smaller Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ communities. This summer the Caravan is coordinated by two doctoral and four undergraduate Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ-Boulder theater students assisting with public performances and children's workshops.

$9 Million Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ-Boulder Space Instrument Set For Launch On FUSE Spacecraft June 23

A $9 million instrument designed and built at the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder for a new NASA satellite is now set for launch from Cape Canaveral, Fla., on June 23. The $100 million Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer mission, or FUSE, will study the far UV light emanating from distant stars, galaxies, quasars and interstellar gas and dust, said James Green, principal investigator on the project and a professor at Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ-BoulderÂ’s Center for Astrophysics and Space Astronomy. CASA is an astronomy center located in Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ-BoulderÂ’s College of Arts and Sciences.

A Midsummer Night's Dessert To Tickle The Tastebuds, Launch Shakespeare Festival

This yearÂ’s 42nd annual Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ Shakespeare Festival is set for a scrumptious start on June 25 when the opening night audience is treated to a free dessert reception before the show. University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder Chancellor Richard L. Byyny and Peter Spear, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, will host the reception which starts at 7 p.m. in the Norlin Quadrangle. First night ticket holders will be able to mingle for 90 minutes sampling such goodies as champagne and strawberries before the curtain rises on "Henry IV Part 1."

Katy Garmany, director of Fiske Planetarium and professor of astrophysical and planetary sciences, will give the free presentation at 10 a.m. in the planetarium. The Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ Wizards program is recommended for children in grades five through nine. No reservations are required.
