50-Year Alumni Reunite For Commencement Weekend

The Alumni Association of the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder will host the golden anniversary reunion of 1950 graduates May 11-13, during the university's May commencement weekend. On Friday, May 12, about 125 members of the class of 1950, dressed in academic regalia, will lead the procession that initiates the university's 2000 commencement ceremony, upholding a longtime Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ-Boulder tradition. Like the class before them, the 1950 graduates were a mix of young kids fresh out of high school and returning World War II vets on the G.I. Bill.

Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ-Boulder School Of Education Receives NCATE Accreditation

The University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder School of Education received accreditation this month from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, the national organization responsible for professional accreditation of teacher education. The approximately 500 institutions accredited by NCATE produce two-thirds of the nationÂ’s new teacher graduates. The U.S. Department of Education recognizes NCATE as the professional accrediting body for schools, departments and colleges of education.

Denver Museum Of Natural History Features Space Weather Exhibit

Media are invited to attend the private event, sponsored by SSI, Raytheon ITSS, Condit Exhibits and Suter Communications. A space weather research and education exhibit developed by Boulder scientists and educators with NASA is now on display at the Denver Museum of Natural History.

Six Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ-Boulder Students Receive Education, Career Scholarships

Six Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ-Boulder students will receive Center for Education and Career Transition Scholarship for the fall 2000 semester. The $600 scholarship is awarded to three categories of students, including undergraduate women, graduate women, and a student 30 years or older. To receive the undergraduate and graduate scholarship awards, students must maintain a 3.5 grade-point average. Applicants for the student over 30 award must maintain a minimum grade-point average of 3.0.

Moores Donate $1.1 Million For Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ-Boulder Graduate Fellowships

Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ-Boulder Chancellor Richard Byyny announced today that Melissa and Anthony Moores have donated $1.1 million in a challenge grant to increase the availability of graduate fellowships in the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at BoulderÂ’s Graduate School. Anthony Moores, a 1977 graduate of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ-BoulderÂ’s Graduate School of Education, and his daughter, Melissa, requested that their gift be applied to graduate fellowships throughout the campus.

Human Rights Standards Added To Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ Licensing Policy

University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder Chancellor Richard L. Byyny announced today that he has approved a revised campus licensing policy that reflects the universityÂ’s commitment to human rights. The changes in the official policy were made following administrative and legal review, todayÂ’s discussion of an ad hoc committeeÂ’s report to the chancellor and proposed changes to the official campus policy on licensing.

Former US Attorney General Edwin Meese To Speak At Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ Law School Commencement

Former United States Attorney General Edwin Meese III will be giving the keynote speech at the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ’s School of Law commencement ceremony this year. Meese was a key political figure in the Reagan White House during the 1980s. Also featured at the May 12 ceremony will be Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ School of Law alumnus Carl "Spike" Eklund. Eklund, an accomplished bankruptcy and corporate restructuring lawyer, will receive the prestigious Honorary Order of the Coif. The commencement begins at 2 p.m. in Macky Auditorium.

Recent House Fire Is Costly Reminder Of Candle Hazard

The recent house fire on University Hill in April is a costly reminder of the potential danger of everyday household items like candles, according to Tom Carney, the emergency management coordinator for the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder. An unattended candle caused the April 21 fire, which gutted the house and left 10 people homeless, including eight Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ-Boulder students, while also damaging many of their possessions.

College Of Engineering To Break Ground On Discovery Learning Center Using GPS

Three Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ Undergraduates Receive Prestigious Goldwater Scholarships

Three students from the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder received prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships for undergraduate academic excellence in the fields of mathematics, natural sciences and engineering. Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ-Boulder junior Katherine Francis and sophomores Saverio Spagnolie and Gadalia Weinberg were among 309 undergraduate students to receive the scholarships for the 2000-01 academic year. A total of 1,176 undergraduate students were nominated nationwide for the awards.
