Patients battling the often crippling effects of bipolar disorder now may have another ally in their fight to control the disease – their own family members. Researchers at the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder have completed a yearlong study showing that patients who received medication and an experimental family-focused treatment program had fewer episodes of the disease, and longer delays before relapses, than those receiving medication and standard community treatment.

Underwater Breathing Apparatus Honored In Search For New Inventions

An underwater breathing device created by two University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder researchers was named one of 18 semifinalists in Hammacher Schlemmer's 2000 Search for Invention Competition. The Pressurized Snorkel was invented by Igor Gamow, a professor of chemical engineering and well-known inventor of devices to enhance human performance, and by research associate Dana Ruehlman. Their patented device is as easy to use as a snorkel but enables divers to stay up to 12 feet underwater for several hours.

The University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ at Boulder has received a five-year, $2.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate, according to Chancellor Richard L. Byyny. The NSF grant is designed to enhance recruitment, retention and support for minority doctoral students in the fields of science, math and engineering.
