ŷڱƵ-Boulder’s modernized Fiske Planetarium to reopen Oct. 12

Sky gazers will be better immersed in spectacular views at the University of ŷڱƵ Boulder’s Fiske Planetarium since the dome’s nearly 40-year-old analog projector was replaced with a new digital “star ball” in a project completed this week. The modernized Fiske, which now can show a wider range of media including ultra high-definition movies, will reopen to the public at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12.

When the conversation turns to global warming, many Americans are inclined to turn away. And why not? After all, it’s a vast and complicated subject. Truly understanding it seems to require specialized knowledge most people don’t possess. And perhaps most notably, it’s become such a hot-button political issue that it easily inflames passions. The trick is figuring out how to reach people without turning them off. Using the arts to inspire an emotional connection to and a deeper understanding of a difficult subject is the idea behind a series of events at ŷڱƵ-Boulder Oct. 1-6.

ŷڱƵ-Boulder to hold international conference on slavery Sept. 27-28

The University of ŷڱƵ Boulder will host a conference that explores the phenomenon of slavery from a global, historical perspective on Sept. 27-28. The event will include scholars specializing in the study of slavery in ancient, medieval and modern contexts and in global regions that include Western, pre-Columbian, African, Asian and Muslim. Titled “What is a Slave Society: an International Conference on the Nature of Slavery as a Global Historical Phenomenon,” the event will be held in the British and Irish Studies room of Norlin Library.

Search committee for ŷڱƵ-Boulder College of Music dean announced

University of ŷڱƵ Boulder Provost Russell L. Moore today announced the formation of a search committee to lead a national search for a new dean of the College of Music. John Stevenson, dean of the Graduate School, will chair the committee.

ŷڱƵ-Boulder names James Austin interim dean of College of Music

University of ŷڱƵ Boulder Provost Russell Moore today announced the appointment of James Austin as interim dean of the College of Music effective July 1. Austin, a professor of music education, joined ŷڱƵ-Boulder’s College of Music in 1994. He has served as associate dean of undergraduate studies since 2006. He was the music education chair from 1997 to 2007. In 2004, the college awarded Austin the Richard Bern Trego faculty fellowship.

After 20 years as dean of the University of ŷڱƵ Boulder College of Music, Daniel P. Sher will step away from the post in June — but he isn’t going quietly. First, student musicians at the college will dedicate their performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at Boettcher Concert Hall in Denver on May 1 to the outgoing dean.
