Like many of you, I watched in horror as tragic events unfolded Monday night on the campus of Michigan State University.
From Chancellor DiStefano
ÌýÌýMy heart breaks for the loved ones of the students who were killed and injured—and the entireÌýMichigan State UniversityÌýcommunity. As we grieve another senseless act of violence, it’s also important that our Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ Boulder community understands our campus safety protocols and the support resources available, as Chief Jokerst explains.Ìý.
On behalf of the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ Police Department and the university, I have reached out to MSU with our deepest sympathies and offers of support in the wake of the rapid and heroic response from the school’s public safety team and area agencies.Ìý
When violence occurs on other college campuses, we recognize there may be heightened awareness of police activity here at Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ Boulder. Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵPD operates in a community policing model, with regular and active car, bike and foot patrols throughout campus. You may notice a more visible police presence this week, including patrols by Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵPD officers, residential service officers and community safety officials. Please feel free to contact us with any safety concerns.
I would like to take this opportunity to remind Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ Boulder students, faculty and staff of our safety protocols, including of incidents that may pose a safety risk on or near campus. Please take a moment to be sure you’re signed up to receive alerts by in your portal.Ìý
Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵPD, along with the university’s emergency management division, offers training and presentations on active harmer response. In addition, we have many campus safety tips and videos on our website.Ìý
The university offers many support services and resources. If you are experiencing trauma or want to refer a friend for support, please do not hesitate to use these resources, free to all students, faculty and staff.ÌýÌý
Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ Boulder takes a holistic approach to campus security, with many departments working together to ensure the safety and well-being of our community. We appreciate the ongoing support and collaboration from all campus stakeholders, , as we share important safety information.
As always, if you have questions, please email me personally.
Respectfully,
Doreen Jokerst
Assistant Vice Chancellor for Public Safety and Chief of Police
