Former ŷڱƵ Boulder visiting law professor and Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch authored the 6-3 opinion, ruling that employees who were terminated because they were gay, lesbian, or transgender were subject to illegal discrimination on the basis of sex.
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects employees from discrimination based on race, color, national origin, sex and religion.
Chancellor Philip DiStefano supported the ruling, which extends to millions of employees around the country.
“The court’s decision reaffirms ŷڱƵ law and Board of Regents law and policy, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, sex, sexual orientation, gender expression and gender identity,” DiStefano said. “We support the LGBTQ+ community as a strong and vibrant part of our academic community.”
