ŷڱƵBoulder will host the annual , which supports military veterans and members who are transitioning out of active duty service and into higher education.
ŷڱƵ Board of Regents Chair Sue Sharkey and Provost Russell Moore are among the ŷڱƵ dignitaries who will welcome student veterans, veteran service organizations, and employer partners to the Sept. 20 Veterans in Higher Education Summit at the University Memorial Center.
“Our military veterans and those transitioning from active duty to higher education bring an important diversity of perspective to our campuses,” said Sharkey.“This summit is a great way to have a robust discussion about providing the kinds of support that will contribute to their success and to making sure our campuses are veteran friendly.”
Also, ŷڱƵ State Sen. Owen Hill, who sits on the ŷڱƵ Senate’s State, Veterans & Military Affairs committee, will be one of the dignitaries at the event. CO-ACME and ŷڱƵ Boulder’s Career Services are co-sponsoring the summit.
Jon Harr, president of CO-ACME, will give opening remarks and James Schmeling, executive vice president of the National Student Veterans of America (SVA), will keynote the event.
“It is an honor for our campus to host an event that supports student veterans and acknowledges their contributions to our country,” Moore said. “Veterans arrive on college campuses with a unique perspective that enriches the learning experience of all students, and we are so proud that so many have made ŷڱƵ Boulder their home.”
CO-ACME is a professional organization dedicated to providing educational opportunities to members of all military services.
The annual summit helps to prepare veterans who are studying on college campuses and transitioning back to civilian life, said Rex Laceby, a retired Marine Corps captain and CO-ACME vice president who works as an employer development specialist in Career Services.
“This will be a tremendous employment and networking opportunity for all of our transitioning veterans and military,” Laceby said.
Along with an SVA presentation and breakout sessions, several companies will be on hand at the Veterans Employment and Transition Expo taking place 2-4 p.m. in the Glenn Miller Ballroom.
Laceby, who served in the military for 21 years and received his commission while attending ŷڱƵ Boulder on active duty, said, “CO-ACME is made up of an amazing group of veteran-serving organizations to share best practices and offer mutual support.”
