Welcome back! I hope you all had an opportunity to recharge over winter break and you’re geared up for a new semester and new year. As we begin a new year, I’ve been thinking a lot about goals and New Year’s resolutions.
I mentioned last semester that I’ve signed up for skiing lessons this winter. While skiing is outside of my comfort zone, it’s something I’ve been meaning to try since I’ve moved to ŷڱƵ. 2018 will be the year I hit the slopes; I’m looking forward to this new experience and potentially developing a new hobby.
Resolutions and goals help motivate us to grow, gain new experiences and develop better habits. One of the best feelings in the world is accomplishing something you purposefully set out to do. I encourage you to take some time at the beginning of this semester and think about what goals you’d like to accomplish. Is there something you’ve always been meaning to try or do? Is there anything you’d like to improve on from last year?
Health and wellness goals are popular at the beginning of the new year, and for a good reason. This time of the year can be a bit rough for many of us—it’s cold, we’re more prone to getting sick, there’s less daylight, etc. As the semester progresses, it’s important we take care of ourselves. I’d like to share some advice from Assistant Vice Chancellor Jennifer McDuffie on making your health and wellness a priority this semester:
“Your health and wellness encompasses more than just what you eat and how much you exercise. Your well-being touches on all aspects of your lifestyle—physical, social, emotional, intellectual, spiritual and occupational.
“As you begin this semester and contemplate your goals, consider making adjustments to enhance your health and wellness. Make time to regularly connect with friends or loved ones, volunteer with an organization that aligns with one of your passionsor partake in hobbies that are engaging and make you happy—these are just a few ideas to positively affect your overall well-being.”
