U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor will deliver the fifth John Paul Stevens Lecture hosted by the Byron R. White Center for the Study of American Constitutional Law at the University of ŷڱƵ Law School on Friday, Sept. 2.
The fireside chat-style event will be held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Macky Auditorium on the ŷڱƵ Boulder campus. A limited number of seats are available to the lecture for the general public at no cost. To register for tickets visit theby Monday, Aug. 22.
Nearly every year, the White Center brings a distinguished jurist to Boulder for a public lecture about the state of the judiciary through the Stevens Lecture. Previous speakers include Justices John Paul Stevens, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sandra Day O’Connor and the late Antonin Scalia.
Past attendance numbers have exceeded 1,000 people, with additional audiences watching via live video stream at the Wolf Law Building on campus and satellite locations at other colleges and universities throughout ŷڱƵ.
Justice Sotomayor earned her bachelor’s degree from Princeton University in 1976 and her law degree from Yale Law School in 1979. She began her career as an assistant district attorney and went on to have a solo practice before entering a private practice. In the 1990s, she was nominated by Presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton to judge seats on the U.S District Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals respectively. In 2009, nominated by President Barack Obama, Justice Sotomayor was confirmed and sworn in as the first Hispanic justice to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.
