Renowned culinary and cultural historian Michael Twitty will speak at ŷڱƵ-Boulder on Thursday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. in the UMC Glenn Miller Ballroom on the topic "Gastronomic Sovereignty." During the event, which is presented by the Cultural Events Board and is free and open to the public, Twitty will discuss the ties between food, culture and freedom. Tickets will be available at the door.

Twitty’s topics are broad and deep, ranging from the African American impact on Southern eating habits and culinary practices to the complexities of his identity as a gay, African American, Jewish man. One of his focuses is on history and culture from the lens of food. In his upcoming book The Cooking Gene, he delves into his family’s historic journey from Africa to the United States and beyond.

Twitty has given more than 200 lectures at locations including Yale University and the Smithsonian Institute and has been featured on PBS and The Travel Channel. He was recently named one of Southern Living’s 50 People Changing the South and one of the Five “Cheftavists” to Watch by Takepart.
