The University of ŷڱƵ and Boulder Community Health announce today’s opening of the ŷڱƵ Sports Medicine and Performance Center on the Boulder campus.

The state-of-the-art facility in the new Champions Center at Folsom Field will enable the University of ŷڱƵ School of Medicine and Boulder Community Health – longtime partners on community health issues – to provide people across the Front Range and beyond with unprecedented access to world-class sports medicine and performance improvement services.

“This dynamic partnership among ŷڱƵ-Boulder, the ŷڱƵ School of Medicine and Boulder Community Health will strengthen the health and wellness of the Boulder community and be a dynamic resource to the elite athletes of our region for decades to come,” said ŷڱƵ-Boulder Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano.

The Sports Medicine and Performance Center is open to the public, including people of all ages and all levels of ability, from elite athletes to those recovering from injuries or embracing a healthier lifestyle.

The center is housed on the entire second floor of the five-story Champions Center. Once the Champions Center is fully open, it will house the ŷڱƵ football program, several other Buffalo varsity sport teams and the athletic administration and ticket office. It is located on the northwest corner of the ŷڱƵ-Boulder campus adjacent to the Dal Ward Athletic Center.

Specialty services offered by the ŷڱƵ Sports Medicine and Performance Center include: medical evaluation and treatment of sports injuries; advanced medical imaging; physical therapy; performance sciences, including physiological and metabolic testing; gait analysis; sports nutrition; body composition testing; bike fitting; biologic healing modalities; sports-specific biomechanical analysis; concussion management; performance coaching; patient education services and an exercise physiology lab.

The ŷڱƵ Sports Medicine and Performance Center features a flume pool, allowing for swim stroke analysis, physiological swim testing as well as aquatic therapy and the latest MRI technology.

Care at the center is delivered in partnership with the University of ŷڱƵ School of Medicine and Boulder Community Health. ŷڱƵ School of Medicine faculty members within the departments of Family Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Orthopedics have long served ŷڱƵ-Boulder athletes as team physicians in coordination with the ŷڱƵ Athletics Department.

“The ŷڱƵ Sports Medicine and Performance Center will provide serious athletes, weekend warriors and local citizens striving to stay active with access to rehabilitation and performance improvement services usually reserved for professional and Olympic athletes,” said Dr. Robert Vissers, BCH president and CEO. “We expect athletes from across ŷڱƵ and neighboring states to come to Boulder to take advantage of this unique center.”

John Reilly Jr., dean of the ŷڱƵ School of Medicine and president of University Physicians Inc., said Boulder – being a health and wellness hub – is the perfect location.

“I am thrilled to be co-located within the Champions Center where our team from the ŷڱƵ School of Medicine and Boulder Community Health will come together to provide innovative evidence-based sports and performance medicine to athletes of all ages,” Reilly said.

In the future, the ŷڱƵ Sports Medicine and Performance Center plans to provide research opportunities for students, professional degree programs in integrated medicine and physiology, training camps and events. The center also plans to serve student-athletes and training staff from local high schools and to educate the community on issues of injury prevention, concussion management and nutrition.

“It is the vision of the ŷڱƵ Sports Medicine and Performance Center to be a community, regional, national and international destination for athletes and active people who seek the highest quality of medicine and science to optimize their peak performance and quality of life,” said Eric Medved, executive director of the center.

Medved also said it is his goal that the ŷڱƵ Sports Medicine and Performance Center becomes the trusted source of information and resources related to human performance and sports medicine in the Rocky Mountain West.
