As part of Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night on Wednesday, Feb. 28, Professor Sam Boyd was honored and brought out on the court during the men's basketball game. It was a really exciting night spent with family. We hope you enjoy these fun pictures!

The Leiden Arabic Humanities and Islamic Thought Blog features a post by Aun Hasan Ali about his recent contribution (co-authored with Hadi Qazwini and Yusuf Ünal) to Shiʿite Legal Theory: Sources and Commentaries.

"Our contribution to the volume comes from a commentary titled al-Wāfī fī sharḥ al-Wāfiya by the scion of a legendary family of Iraqi sayyids: Muḥsin b. al-Ḥasan al-Aʿrajī (d. 1812), also known as al-Muḥaqqiq al-Kāẓimī (not to be confused with Asad Allāh b. Ismāʿīl al-Tustarī [d. 1819 or 1821], the author of Kashf al-qināʿ). A sharp critic of Akhbārism, al-Aʿrajī is counted among the foremost champions of Uṣūlism in the eighteenth century. The original text, al-Wāfiya fī uṣūl al-fiqh by al-Fāḍil al-Tūnī (d. 1660), contains one of the earliest responses to Muḥammad Amīn al-Astarābādī's (d. 1626) devastating criticism of developments in Twelver Shīʿī law since Ilkhānid times."

Brian Catlos was selected as Faculty Awardee for his work on Mediterranean Studies and with the ŷ��ڱ��Ƶ Mediterranean Studies Group (since 2011) and the Mediterranean Seminar, both of which he founded and directs (the latter with Sharon Kinoshita of UCSC). The ŷ��ڱ��Ƶ Mediterranean Studies group is an interdisciplinary collaborative group which brings speakers to campus, organizes conferences, workshops and events, and supports faculty and graduate students through works-in-progress workshops, as well as conducting outreach with the Front Range community. As practiced by the Group, Mediterranean Studies works to move beyond Eurocentric narratives relating to the origin and emergence of the Modern West (broadly defined as the Abrahamic cultural sphere) and to integrate the histories of Europe, Africa and West Asia, and Christian, Muslim and Jewish societies and cultures. This approach is reflected in his recent textbook The Sea in the Middle: The Mediterranean World, 650-1650. The Group actively works to include narratives relating to historically marginalized groups and perspectives and to support junior scholars and those identifying with under-represented constituencies. The Group receives no regular support from the College or University and depends on the contributions of supporting departments and programs.

Students, employees and a unit are being honored for their efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in the University of ŷ��ڱ��Ƶ Boulder College of Arts and Sciences. ASCEND Awards go to faculty, staff, graduate students and undergraduate students who have demonstrated a commitment to the principles and actions of diversity and inclusion in curriculum, creative teaching practice, community building endeavors and/or communication. The winners are the recipients of the third annual awards from ASCEND, or the Arts and Sciences Consortium of Committees on Climate, Equity, Inclusion and Diversity. The 2023 winners were selected and announced by the Diversity Committee of the Arts and Sciences Council, which is the primary representative body for the college’s faculty.

Loriliai Biernacki’s The Matter of Wonder: Abhinavagupta’s Panentheism and New Materialism argues that we can use the philosophical writing of the 11th century Indian philosopher Abhinavagupta on the nature of wonder and subjectivity to help make sense of our current complex world. Abhinavagupta’s insights on the nature of self and how wonder operates allows us to rethink our relationship to matter, from artificial intelligence to the rich web of human, plant and animal interaction, to our concepts of the body as physical object and subtle expression of human thoughts and desires.

Dr. Holly Gayley hosted the Kayden Translation Symposium on a sunny fall afternoon at the Koenig Alumni Center. The symposium convened to discuss translations of Tibetan literary works by, about, and for Buddhist women. The seminar was made possible through the 2021 Kayden Translation Award for Inseparable Across Lifetimes: The Lives and Love Letters of the Visionary Couple Namtrul Rinpoche and Khandro Tāre Lhamo, translated by Holly Gayley.
