NSF CAREER program preparation headlines spring faculty development calendar
The Research & Innovation Office (RIO) has unveiled its Spring Faculty Development and Workshop calendar for 2020. Faculty are encouraged to explore the full range of offerings for the rest of the semester, including the select upcoming opportunities highlighted below. Note that most events request registration.

The purpose of this workshop is to begin thinking about your readiness as a PI to submit an NSF CAREER Award proposal for the mid-July 2020 deadline. It is the first step in the spring schedule leading up to one-on-one writing and proposal development coaching, and, hopefully, the assembly of a supportive peer writing group. The workshop will be led by RIO Proposal Writer Diane Carillo and will feature a panel of campus NSF CAREER awardees. March 4:
Stressed about developing budgets for proposals? The Proposal Budgeting 101 workshop can help. Please join the and the Office of Contracts and Grants (OCG) for a Proposal Budgeting 101 workshop for externally funded research, scholarship and creative work projects.
Senior OCG staff will provide an overview of the budget process for faculty and administrators looking to understand budget basics, including the federal and university policies that guide budget development. Following the presentation, there will be an opportunity for Q&A.
March 11:
Broader impacts are one of two criteria used by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to evaluate every grant proposal. Join former NSF Program Director and Associate Dean for Research, Massimo Ruzzene, as well as faculty and staff with extensive expertise in broader impacts work, to discuss this key element of proposals. Campus specialists will share resources and guidance to help you plan effective integration of broader impacts activities into your research, and senior faculty from a variety of departments will share their experiences reviewing broader impacts statements on NSF panels.
RIO's Broader Impacts Network is the central campus resource connecting the research and creative works community with the partners, tools and resources needed to successfully develop and implement socially significant broader impacts.
Value-packed workshops for faculty are just one of the many resources the Research & Innovation Office provides to support faculty. RIO鈥檚 Research Development team sponsors and identifies funding opportunities, develops research capacity among investigators, provides support for proposal development and facilitates multidisciplinary collaborations.
