Upholding the impact and legacy of composer George Crumb
Associate Professor of Music Theory Steven Bruns and the late, renowned composer George Crumb shared a close, long-lasting professional relationship and a deep friendship that began in 1992. As Bruns nears retirement this spring, he reflects on his role as Crumb’s archivist and biographer.

• Man the lifeboats—here comes “Titanic” (the musical): Directed by Broadway veteran and ŷ���ڱ���Ƶ Boulder College of Music guest faculty Bob Westenberg, “Titanic, the Musical” comes to Macky Auditorium in March. “...the creators tried to humanize what happened, telling of passengers in first, second and third class. We’ll see how those characters perform under that terrible duress and how the storyline is musicalized. This is what makes for the classical structure of a musical,” says Westenberg. • We’re thrilled that lyric soprano Cynthia Lawrence (MMus ’87)—who studied with the late Barbara Doscher—will be inducted into the ŷ���ڱ���Ƶ Music Hall of Fame on June 29, along with the Central City Opera, the late conductor/artistic director John Moriarty and Keith Miller, a former ŷ���ڱ���Ƶ Boulder football player turned opera singer who sang in the College of Music’s opera chorus. Congratulations to all!
• Congrats to Madison Falkenstine—Miss ŷ���ڱ���Ƶ Volunteer 2024—who’s pursuing a master’s in vocal pedagogy at our College of Music! Her platform is Fine Arts for All, bringing quality music education to every school in ŷ���ڱ���Ƶ.
• Did you know? The is a collection of the College of Music and our American Music Research Center that aims to increase representation of BIPOC composers in our library across instruments and voice types. Explore + submit your suggestions!
• Feb. 13, 8:30-10 a.m.: Join us for our next College of Music coffee hour (Grusin Lobby); bagels/donuts will be served!  
• Feb. 14: Tea + equity: Join us for DEI discussions over tea. Students, faculty, staff and other campus constituents are welcome to join us on Wednesdays at 4 p.m. (Grusin Lobby). On Valentine’s Day, we’ll be joined by participants in our Entrepreneurship Center for Music!
• Feb. 15: Thriving at ŷ���ڱ���Ƶ series: A monthly workshop series for tenure- and instructor-track faculty who are in their first three years at ŷ���ڱ���Ƶ Boulder. 
• Associate professor growth grants: All mid-career tenured associate professors who are not currently under review for promotion to professor are eligible to apply for one-year funding up to $12K to support a project. Apply by March 1.

• The newly launched ŷ���ڱ���Ƶ Boulder commencement website is designed to prepare our graduates, their families and guests—complementing the College of Music commencement webpage for day-of details, including a soon-to-be posted schedule of our college’s recognition festivities.
• Feel Good Fridays: A weekly hybrid workshop to learn about a work of art and then participate in a related mindfulness practice.
