Noteworthy

Celebrating the legacy and impact of Anna Sie, lifelong supporter of the arts and humanity: Sie left a powerful legacy of impact at ŷ��ڱ��Ƶ Boulder, including establishing a transformational student scholarship in the College of Music with her husband, John, and endowing several faculty chairs.
Congratulations to doctoral student James Morris, national winner of the Young Artist division of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) National Composition Competition! The video of Morris’ composition—a movement from his sonata for cello and piano—will be published on the MTNA website and performed at the Winners Concert at the National Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, in March. Morris studies piano with Associate Professor of Piano Jennifer Hayghe and composition with Assistant Professor of Composition Annika Socolofsky.
Our Professor of Horn Mike Thornton—who’s also Principal Horn with the ŷ��ڱ��Ƶ Symphony—will perform Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 4 in the ŷ��ڱ��Ƶ Symphony’s upcoming “Mozart & Now” concerts. Additionally, as an encore, Thornton will perform a work by doctoral student James Morris. Shares Thornton, “James wrote a beautiful Romance for one of my students last year—when I heard it on her recital, I asked James if I could play it.” Since then, the ŷ��ڱ��Ƶ Symphony commissioned an orchestration of Morris’ work as an encore: A terrific collaboration! This week, our awesome Takács Quartet was featured on NPR’s Morning Edition in The quartet commissioned the composition and gave it its world premiere in November 2023 … and is now touring it across the country. The Takács Quartet will perform “Flow” on campus in March!
Congratulations to Professor of Conducting Emeritus and Distinguished Professor Allan McMurray who will be inducted into the ŷ��ڱ��Ƶ Music Educators Association Hall of Fame on Jan. 25 as part of the 2024 CMEA clinic/conference! McMurray was nominated for the well-deserved honor by College of Music Dean Emeritus Daniel Sher.
