Dissertations and Theses: Common Copyright and Fair Use Questions鈥擮ct. 5 @ 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., via Zoom
How can I reuse material from my dissertation for publications, or visa versa? Do I need to register copyright for my dissertation/thesis? Should I share my dissertation/thesis publicly, and how do I go about sharing it? What do I need to be concerned about when using material from other publications in my dissertation/thesis? If you鈥檝e asked yourself any of these questions, this workshop is for you, as it will explore copyright law, fair use principles, and publisher policies and help you to make important decisions about your own dissertation or thesis.

Proposal Writing: Keeping the Narrative Simple鈥擮ct. 19 @ 12 to 1 p.m., via Zoom
A project narrative that is easy to read is one that is more likely to be read. In this session we鈥檒l cover the concepts of word choice, transitions, and narrative flow. The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA) in partnership with the GradCO alliance invites graduate students and postdocs to a virtual information series on successful proposal development. Jim Mazzouccolo, proposal editor and writing coach for the Research & Innovation Office (RIO), will discuss key strategies and practices to enhance your proposal鈥檚 competitiveness.

Five Ways to Respond to Conflict Effectively鈥擮ct. 25 @ 10-11:30 a.m., via Zoom
Conflict is inevitable. The key is to handle conflict effectively when it arises. During this workshop, Liz Hill, JD, associate director, Ombuds Office, will use the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI) to help you assess your typical behavior in conflict situations, learn about each of the five common conflict resolution styles, and discuss when to use each style.

GradCO: What is your research groove? A Slow Scholarship Panel Discussion鈥擮ct. 31 @ 1:45-2:45 p.m., via Zoom
Join our esteemed panel to discuss the process of "slow scholarship."听How can we imagine a work ethos that allows for the time, care, and space needed for thoughtful contributions? What are the pitfalls of churning out as many articles as possible? What are we missing when we do not take the time to really think and reflect? Can the turtle and the hare both enjoy the race? Add your voice to this important discussion.

Graduation Deadlines

October 1, 2022

  • Graduate students must apply online to graduate through on the 鈥渁pply for graduation鈥 card in order to have the degree awarded in December. This is required even though there is no university-wide ceremony.听PhD students must enter their dissertation title as part of the online graduation application; you may update the title through the portal until this date.听This title will appear on your transcript after your degree is awarded.

  • Master's students must submit to the Graduate School a .听Applications follow a workflow process and must be approved by the academic department before they are directed to the Graduate School.

postdoctoral opportunities:
Sandia National Laboratories is seeking candidates for two Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowships in National Security Science and Engineering. These fellowships are three-year appointments that allow recipients to pursue independent research that supports Sandia's national security mission. The salary ranges from $116,800 to $128,500 based on geographical location and includes a competitive benefits package. Candidates must be able to obtain a security clearance, which requires US citizenship. They must have been awarded a PhD (with strong academic standing) within three years at the time of application or will have completed all PhD requirements by commencement of the appointment.


  • This fellowship recognizes and honors the achievements of Jill Hruby who served as President and Director of Sandia National Laboratories from 2015 to 2017, spent 34 years at Sandia, and was the first woman to be appointed director of a large multidisciplinary national security laboratory. Jill was also selected to be the Department of Energy鈥檚 Under Secretary for Nuclear Security under the Biden administration.听 Candidates must display excellent abilities in scientific and/or engineering research in areas of interest to national security. Fellows will pursue independent research and participate in the Hruby Postdoctoral Fellow Leadership Program.听Deadline: October 17, 2022, with a nominal fellowship start date of October 1, 2023. 听


  • This fellowship honors President Truman who, in 1949, asked AT&T to accept managerial responsibility of Sandia and challenged us to provide 鈥渁n exceptional service in the national interest鈥濃攁 motto that leads us to excel to this day. Candidates must display excellent abilities in scientific and/or engineering research in areas of interest to national security.听Deadline: November 1, 2022, with a nominal fellowship start date of October 1, 2023. 听
