The members of Flying Wizards pose with their advisor, Khurram Afridi, at the 2016 capstone expo.

The NeighborGrid is an electricity distribution solution for people who live in communities that lack an electrical grid; where owners of solar panels are the only residents of a community who have access to electricity. Residents will use the NeighborGrid to establish their own grid, at low cost and under community control.

Electrical distribution using the NeighborGrid will improve the lives of all residents of a community. Owners of solar panels will be able to generate income by selling surplus electricity to their neighbors, with the convenience of selling it directly through the NeighborGrid. Other residents of the community will see their quality of life improve as they become able to purchase electricity directly into their homes for the first time. Home electricity is a significant advantage for a variety of applications, from lighting to owning a cell phone to being able to use home medical devices.

The NeighborGrid will handle the marketplace functions of the community grid. With this easy solution to handle the financial transactions, neighbors will be able to conveniently buy and sell electricity as easily as flipping a light switch, and with the same convenience as being connected to an established grid.

Special thanks to our faculty project advisor and sponsor, Dr. Khurram Afridi, as well as to Dr. Behrouz Touri who has provided guidance and helped define our objectives.
