Nowadays, most communication is going wireless. Whether people communicate through their cellular phones, online messaging services or e-mail, all information is being transmitted wirelessly. Team Blue is taking a cue from this and will design a Bluetooth Enabled Control Unit, for use with a car. This system will be able to perform simple car functions by inputting the preferred function to a program on a PDA. The PDA will then transfer that information to a Bluetooth receiver on an FPGA. After the data transfer, the FPGA will drive a voltage to the specified car function, such as unlocking and locking doors, opening or closing windows, etc.
This project will not only benefit our team by enhancing our engineering skills, but the project itself is practical. Only select cars have the OnStar system, and we feel as if this project can be universal to cars in general. While this project cannot claim to have all the features that OnStar offers, we can safely say that our project can still help drivers by controlling important car functions.
