On Tour with Beyonc茅
Sometimes you just have to cut the line.听
That鈥檚 what saxophonist Tia Fuller听(MMus鈥00) was thinking outside a听2006 audition for Beyonc茅鈥檚 all-female听touring band.听
Fuller was then rehearsing her own听album also; time was precious. The odds听were long and the audition line wrapped听around the corner.听
鈥淚鈥檓 not waiting eight hours,鈥澨齭he thought.听
Talking with someone she knew,听Fuller, then 30, politely finagled her way听into the line without a ripple.听
Good thing, too: She was called听back for another performance and听eventually got a ring from Beyonc茅鈥檚听music director.听
鈥淏eyonc茅 specifically asked for you,鈥澨齭he told Fuller.听
Narrowed to 150 candidates from听5,000, Fuller was among 10 musicians听who made the final cut.听
As an active member of Beyonce鈥檚 band听from 2006-2010, she toured the world for听eight months of the year and rehearsed听for three months.听
鈥淲e went to every continent听except Antarctica!鈥澨齭aid Fuller, who grew up听in Aurora, Colo., and began听playing classical piano听at age 3, adding flute and听saxophone before she was听a teenager.听
While touring with听Beyonc茅, Fuller founded听the Tia Fuller Quartet in听New York.听
鈥淣othing lasts forever,听so I wanted to remain听visible on the jazz听scene with my quartet,鈥澨齭he said.听
When Beyonc茅鈥檚 band听went on break in late听2010, Fuller took her own听act on the road. In time,听she also planted a foot in听the academy, accepting听a full-time professorship听teaching in Boston.听
In one 24-hour period in听January 2013, she received听a teaching offer from听Berklee College of Music听鈥 and a call from Beyonc茅听to rejoin the band.听
鈥淎fter lots of prayer, I said 鈥榊es鈥 to听Berklee and 鈥楴o鈥 to Beyonc茅,鈥 said听Fuller, who teaches in the ensemble听department. 鈥淎t Berklee, it鈥檚 flexible so听I can tour, play, stay visible and direct听eight different ensembles.鈥澨
By now, she鈥檚 got four albums of her听own, most recently Angelic Warrior.
鈥淚 merged what I鈥檇 learned from听Beyonc茅 about marketing and sequencing听a show into creating my own story,鈥澨齭he said. 鈥淚 now have an idea about听how to integrate R&B into the jazz听world, constantly tailor-making set听lists for different audiences.鈥澨
Her biggest challenge is balancing听her teaching and touring schedule听while starting a business, a booking听agency called Elthopia Productions.听
鈥淚 need to maintain a balance in听everything and not feel guilty if听I am taking time听for leisure activities,鈥 she said.听
That includes sitting down occasionally听on her couch.
