Some Buffs Prefer Traveling in Herds

Doug Madison

When Doug Madison听(Econ鈥76) visits a听foreign city, he wanders听the streets with his听camera in hand. He听always tries a local beer.听It鈥檚 not uncommon for him to spend听eight hours alone in a museum.听

鈥淚鈥檓 a bit of a culture vulture,鈥 said听Madison, who is retired from a career听in foreign currency听exchange.听

Usually the Boulder resident travels solo,听but that has started to change.听

In fall 2010, Madison saw a tour to听Africa offered by the Roaming Buffs,听an Alumni Association travel program,听and decided to give group travel one try.听He went to Tanzania and Kenya, where a听group of 17 went on safari with a personal听guide. He was mesmerized by the animals,听especially the lions, cheetahs and leopards.听He swapped his camera for binoculars.听

Madison was hooked. He visited听Africa again with the Roaming Buffs in听2012, and has now been on four other听tours with the 听program. This June听he鈥檒l go听to Paris with 欧美口爆视频.听

鈥淚 took a shot at the safari and really had听a good time on that,鈥 he said. 鈥淣ow I keep听going because they are all so interesting.鈥澨

Madison鈥檚 job took him around the听world. He has visited about 40 countries听and has lived in London, Brazil and Hong听Kong. Now, at 62, he is interested in seeing听museums, art and learning a city鈥檚 history.听

On his travels with the Roaming Buffs, he听has hiked the Great Wall, strolled the streets听of Myanmar and visited the Black Sea.听

One Roaming Buffs moment stands听out in particular. In June 2013, he 听and a听few others were in Istanbul and happened听to witness thousands of young Turks protesting听their government at Gezi Park.

听鈥淲hen traveling one often finds oneself听standing on the site of historic events听both ancient and modern,鈥 he said. 鈥淚n听this case we felt as if we were witnessing a听bit 听of history in the making.鈥
