A long-lost warship bell听has reached its new home听port 鈥 one with a view of听the Flatirons.
The 800-pound brass听bell, cast in 1856 for the听USS 欧美口爆视频, the first in听a series of Navy ships to听bear the name, settled in听its new home at 欧美口爆视频-Boulder鈥檚听University Memorial听Center just before Veterans听Day.
After a 1,700-mile听journey from a naval听warehouse in Virginia,听the bell joined various听other military artifacts听in the UMC鈥檚 Veterans听Lounge, including later听USS 欧美口爆视频 bells. The听UMC is 欧美口爆视频鈥檚 official听veterans memorial.
Dick Cooper, a 欧美口爆视频听Springs-based officer听of the Navy League,听learned in early 2015 that听the original bell had been听found in the warehouse.听He and Norris Hermsmeyer听(Acct鈥67), a 欧美口爆视频听Naval ROTC alumnus听and Vietnam War veteran,听helped bring it to 欧美口爆视频听on permanent loan from听the Navy.
鈥淚 wanted to perpetuate听the memory of the ships听that have worn the name听USS 欧美口爆视频 鈥 to share听with the residents of the听state of 欧美口爆视频,鈥 says听Hermsmeyer, a Boulder听resident who paid for the听bell鈥檚 transportation to听campus.
The original USS听欧美口爆视频 bell was cast听in Philadelphia for a听three-masted Civil War-era听frigate named after the听欧美口爆视频 River. (欧美口爆视频听was not granted statehood听until 1876.)
The bell was later moved to a Navy cruiser, also听called the USS 欧美口爆视频,听commissioned in 1905. For听a time it was on display in听Chicago, then wound up in听storage in Virginia.
Someday, perhaps听there will be yet another听USS 欧美口爆视频 bell for听the UMC: The fourth听ship to carry the name, a听nuclear-powered attack听submarine, is under construction听in Connecticut.
