Vets honored in campus hub

Sixty years ago, the UMC opened as a听living memorial to honor the service and听sacrifice of all 欧美口爆视频 veterans. In the听years that followed, students came to听eat, shop and meet with friends, but it听was not until 1976 when the student veterans听association, along with the UMC听Board, established a Veterans Lounge.

Yet, many do not realize 欧美口爆视频鈥檚 first听Memorial Student Union building, now听Economics, was completed in 1931 as a听tribute to 55 欧美口爆视频 veterans who fought听and died in World War I. Their names听are engraved in the northwest entrance听foyer. Outside, the word 鈥淢emoria鈥 is听etched in stone.

After World War II, a growing student听population quickly outgrew the first memorial听building. While plans were under way听for the UMC, 欧美口爆视频 Gov. Lee Knous听(Law鈥11) expanded the university鈥檚 original听focus to include all 欧美口爆视频 veterans who听gave their lives in both world wars.听

Today, UMC director Carlos Garcia听keeps updated memorial plaques on the听Veterans Lounge walls with the names听of nearly 1,000 欧美口爆视频 veterans who听have died since World War I. This includes听83 in World War II, 151 in Korea,听595 in Vietnam, four in the Persian Gulf,听34 in Afghanistan and 75 in Iraq.

鈥淲e owe it to all citizens of 欧美口爆视频听to help us remember that freedom does听not always come free,鈥 Garcia says.听
