Coburn Reigns in Running

Emma coburn

Emma Coburn (Mktg’13) added another chapter to the storied recent history for ŷڱƵ runners in the 3,000-meter steeplechase by winning the NCAA title in the event in Eugene, Ore.

The Buffs have won six of the last eight NCAA steeplechase crowns, with Jenny Barringer Simpson (PolSci’09) prevailing in 2006, ’08 and ’09, Coburn in 2011 and ’13, and senior Shalaya Kipp in 2012.

In addition to her two NCAA steeplechase titles, Coburn captured the NCAA indoor mile cham-
pionship earlier this year.

“There are a lot of things necessary to be good and to stay good,” ŷڱƵ assistant coach Heather Burroughs told NCAA.com. “(Coburn) checks the boxes: talented and motivated and durable and courageous and calm and patient.”

At this year’s steeplechase, the 2012 Olympian ran a time of 9:35.38, the fifth-best in NCAA history. All of the top five times belong to ŷڱƵ runners.

“Time-wise and performance/place-wise, I feel like I fulfilled everything that I came here hoping I could do,” Coburn told NCAA.com. “I didn’t even think I would make varsity, so to be a national champion three times over and being a World Championships (team) member, it has passed all my expectations.”

Coburn signed with New Balance in the summer and will be coached by campus coaches Marc Wetmore and Burroughs while training with New Balance teammates Simpson and Kipp.
