Fall 2023 Information Science Showcase

Student Awards and Fellowships

Erin Robinson was accepted in the first class of . The Socio-Environmental Knowledge Commons (SEEKCommons) project is dedicated to building pathways for horizontal collaborations across Science and Technology Studies (STS), Open Science (OS), and socio-environmental researchers and community organizers.

The SEEKCommons Fellowship is an initiative to bring graduate students and early-career researchers with new perspectives and voices to socio-environmental research with open technologies.

听

Grad Comm awarded scholarships to all current INFO Research Master鈥檚 students: Jayla Harding (Marcella G. Hertzog Memorial Scholarship Fund) and Zoe Fisher, Kendall Fronabarger, Joanna Mendy, Delaney Torrisi, and Cade Wilson (Ernie and Jean Martin Graduate Fund). Thank you all for enriching our community!

Awards were also given to outstanding PhD students in the department: Sid Cook was recognized for their consistent care and relationship building among members of the community providing day-to-day care when it matters most (Ralph L. Crosman Memorial Fund); Erin Robinson, for establishing funding capacity for this year鈥檚 GSA to better support all of our grad student colleagues (Ernie and Jean Martin Graduate Fund); and Julia Dean and Blakeley Hoffman, for their essential work听helping our community advance its anti-racism agenda through organized community events (Ernie and Jean Martin Graduate Fund).

Invited Talks

Katy Weathington [INFO PhD student]听spoke on the "Modelling Gender" Panel at , an online event designed for the Wikidata community that focuses 听on听how data is described and organized on Wikidata. The panel was part of a series of events that took place from November 30-December 2, 2023.

Graduate Student Updates

Shamika Klassen [INFO PhD candidate] has accepted an offer to work as a User Experience Researcher in the Bay Area for Google starting in June 2024. Best of luck, Shamika!

Conference News

Evan Peck [INFO Faculty] will present at the with colleagues from听WPI, Northwestern U, Northeastern U, University of San Francisco, and IBM. The workshop is titled: "Toward a More Comprehensive Understanding of Visualization Literacy" and听aims to facilitate and deepen critical discussions about how to define, study听and improve visualization literacy.

Evan Peck [INFO faculty], Darakhshan Mir (Bucknell U), Nathan Ryan (Bucknell U), Anne Ross (Bucknell U), Vanessa Massaro (Bucknell U), Sara Stoudt (Bucknell U)

In collaboration with colleagues at Bucknell University, Evan Peck's听proposal, "Building a Just Computing Movement: Integrating curricular and co-curricular experiences", was awarded one of Mozilla's Responsible Computing Challenge grants, and will help fund a "Just Tech Fellows" program in Spring 2024. Together, he and colleages will pilot, evaluate听and share processes that integrate co-curricular interventions鈥攃entering marginalized groups鈥攊nto existing geography, computer science and information science courses.
