Faculty in the Department of Information Science and joined theÌýongoing effort at the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ Boulder to run the awardsÌýevent for the Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Award, now in itsÌýseventh year.ÌýÌýThe event, sponsored by the (NCWIT), headquartered here on campus, has been runÌýby Ken Anderson of the Department of Computer Science in the College ofÌýEngineering and Applied Science.
This year, a team of faculty from acrossÌýthe the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ in computer science, ATLASÌýand informationÌýscience came together to plan an even bigger and better event, hosting aÌýhalf-day long program honoring and supporting high school women‹and theirÌýteachers‹who are excelling in computing.
Sixty-nine high-school women were honored from acrossÌýÅ·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ. Faculty Casey Fiesler (INFO), Danielle Szafir (INFO), BenÌýShapiro (ATLAS) and Ken Anderson (CS) were supported by Edie Cheng, KaiviÌýKumar, Ammi Ludwick, Ruthe Farmer and Lucy Sanders of NCWIT for the day¹sÌýactivities, which included a pre-event workshop and a panel of technicalÌýwomen from industry and academia.
The event was a year in planning, withÌýstudents, schools, and teachers from across the state applying to theÌýprogram last fall.
Financial sponsors of the event included ViaWest,ÌýTwitter, the Zayo Group and Medtronic, who also contributed to the prizesÌýthat were given to the awardees at the event.
