On Thursday, November 18, 2021 at 12pm noon via Zoom, Dr. Philip Deloria from Harvard University held a workshop with graduate students to discuss the future of Ph.D programs and the ways in which programs can be renewed/revitalized to fit a changing world of academia.

This virtual workshop was exclusively for graduate students at Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ Boulder. Registration was required to meet and participate in the virtual workshop with Dr. Deloria, one of the leading scholars on social, cultural and political histories of the relations among American Indian peoples and the United States. Deloria received the Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale University in 1994, taught for six years at the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ Boulder, and then at the University of Michigan from 2001 to 2017, before joining the faculty at Harvard in January 2018.

Philip J. Deloria is the Leverett Saltonstall Professor of History at Harvard University, where his research and teaching focus on the social, cultural and political histories of the relations among American Indian peoples and the United States.  He is the author of several books, including Playing Indian (Yale University Press, 1998), Indians in Unexpected Places (University Press of Kansas, 2004), American Studies: A User’s Guide (University of California Press, 2017), with Alexander Olson, and Becoming Mary Sully: Toward an American Indian Abstract (University of Washington Press, 2019), as well as two co-edited books and numerous articles and chapters.  Deloria received the Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale University in 1994, taught at the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ, and then, from 2001 to 2017, at the University of Michigan, before joining the faculty at Harvard in January 2018.  

Deloria is a trustee of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian.  He is former president of the American Studies Association, an elected member of the American Philosophical Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the recipient of numerous prizes and recognitions, and serves as president of the Organization of American Historians in 2022.

Fellowship Writing workshop – Tuesday, June 8, 2021 9:30-10:30 am MT – co-hosted by  Director Jennifer Ho and RIO Proposal Editor & Writing Coach Donna Axel, this workshop talked about the genre of fellowship writing, especially for faculty interested in applying for fellowships that grant faculty a semester (or more) free of teaching [CHA faculty fellowship deadline Thursday, October 1 by 5:00 pm MT;  (dates for 2020 haven’t yet been released but will probably be similar to last year);  deadline Oct 7]. Panelists included Christine Larson (Journalism) and Julia Staffel (Philosophy).

On July 27th, 2020, the CHA held a Fellowship Writing Workshop on Zoom from 3-4 PM MT for faculty at Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ Boulder who wanted guidance and direction on creating stronger fellowship applications for opportunities that grant a semester (or more) free of teaching.

The workshop was co-lead by Donna Axel in RIO, Rebecca Maloy in Musicology, David Shneer in Jewish Studies, and Julia Staffel in Philosophy. 

Thirty eight faculty members were in attendance. 

The CHA Faculty Fellowship deadline is Thursday, October 1, 2020 by 5:00 PM MT.

The National Humanities Center deadline is October 8, 2020.
