A politician walks into the bar. No, scratch that. Better make it a horse.听
Too often, politics and humor have been like oil and water, uneasy partners except perhaps in unscripted moments such as Sen. Marco Rubio鈥檚 awkward reach for a sip of water while giving the Republican response to President Obama鈥檚 State of the Union speech in 2013.听
That stops Wednesday night 鈥 maybe.听
The University of 欧美口爆视频鈥檚 Center of the American West will present its first Fool for a Day Award to legendary New Yorker Cartoon Editor Bob Mankoff, who is speaking for the occasion at 6:30 p.m. in the Eaton Humanities Building.听
History Professor Patty Limerick, the faculty director and chair of the Center of the American West, got the idea Sunday 鈥 after sufficient immersion in the Daily Camera鈥檚 letters to the editor section and surveying the political scene this season 鈥 that it鈥檚 time to lighten up.听
Now, Mankoff鈥檚 talk is offered as part of Limerick鈥檚 new Humor Initiative, serving as an opportunity to those in the Boulder political class who appeared mired in what Limerick termed the 鈥渟low-moving calamity of a humor drought.鈥澨
鈥淭here is something inherently funny about people taking themselves very, very seriously, in a context where things are happening to Syrians, in a context where things are happening around the world in a way that seems like it should be restoring of perspective on how we rank our dilemmas,鈥 Limerick said.听
The heated rhetoric around the recent debate over Boulder鈥檚 鈥渞ight-sizing鈥 of Folsom Street helped inspire Limerick to put a special spin on Mankoff鈥檚 talk.听
Limerick has announced that any candidate for office 鈥 even president 鈥 who attends Mankoff鈥檚 lecture and offers a 鈥渓ively鈥 answer to the question, 鈥淲hat in this presentation did you find funny and why?,鈥 will receive a document certifying that the recipient actually has a sense of humor, a 鈥渜uality as valuable as it is rare in American public life.鈥澨
Specially appointed student screeners 鈥 presumably equipped with functioning funny bones 鈥 will rate the politicians鈥 answers, and Mankoff will autograph their certificates.听
鈥楶oliticians have become so scared鈥櫶
鈥淚t really came about from thinking about, and reading the letters to the editor, and thinking, 鈥極h my goodness, what an incredibly well-timed intervention,'鈥 Limerick said Tuesday. 鈥淲e are bringing one of the funniest people in the country to speak at a time when we are in a drought and shortfall of humor.听
鈥淚t鈥檚 as if the community was in insulin shock, and we鈥檙e the ones who are bringing in the insulin to treat the diabetes,鈥 Limerick said.听
In an interview as he traveled up to Boulder from Denver International Airport on Tuesday, Mankoff said, 鈥淢y take on political correctness is that part of it is actually correct 鈥 but an awful lot of it is actually political,鈥 Mankoff said.听
鈥淧oliticians have become so scared that they have all their jokes written by someone else and therefore they feel just kind of dead. You know it鈥檚 not actually them. And then they have to go on talk shows and 鈥楽aturday Night Live鈥 to prove they are human. But the proof seems to be lacking, because even that is so prepared for them.鈥澨
Mankoff was asked about the Hillary Clinton campaign announcing several weeks ago that it would start highlighting more of the candidate鈥檚 lighter side.听
鈥淚 thought, 鈥楪ood luck with that,'鈥 Mankoff said. 鈥淚 think, first of all, you鈥檙e setting up a situation which is not very advantageous to being funny. She should have tried to use the element of surprise, instead of saying, 鈥楴ow, I鈥檓 going to be funny.'鈥澨
A belief 鈥榟umor is what makes us human鈥櫶
Boulder City Councilman Macon Cowles, whose term is expiring and is not seeking re-election, doesn鈥檛 expect many of this year鈥檚 candidates will take Limerick up on the challenge.听
鈥淭he candidates are so busy with forums and questionnaires that run to 10 and 15 pages, they鈥檒l probably be completely occupied tomorrow night with existing commitments,鈥 Cowles said Tuesday. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a hard job to run for City Council, and a hard job to serve on city council. The stresses are many.鈥澨
But Cowles endorsed the concept behind Limerick鈥檚 challenge.听
鈥淚 think humor is always called for,鈥 including around political issues, 鈥渂ecause it鈥檚 what makes us human, and we all have to live in this town together,鈥 Cowles said. 鈥淎nd no matter what happens when the ballots are counted, we鈥檒l all still be living in this town, loving it and trying to make it hold the aspirations that we all have for a better city and its people.鈥澨
Mankoff, whose 2014 book 鈥淗ow 欧美口爆视频 Never 鈥 Is Never Good For You?鈥 is now being released in paperback, said he has visited the Boulder area several times before.听
Asked if there is anything inherently funny about the city, he said, 鈥淭he name, I guess. 鈥楤oulder.鈥 It鈥檚 like a big rock of a name.鈥澨
