Colleen Sheehan: The World of Emma Woodhouse

"emma" poster

In celebration of Jane Austen鈥檚 birthday month, the Benson Center and the Boulder Public Library present the 1996 period comedy film Emma, featuring Gwyneth Paltrow, based on the 1815 novel of the same name. Following the screening, Colleen Sheehan, an Austen scholar and Benson Center Scholar in Residence will lead a lively discussion of the film.

Even more than Elizabeth Bennet or Mary Crawford, Emma Woodhouse is Austen's most provocative heroine.  She rivals Mary Crawford in smarts, Lizzie Bennet in wit and liveliness, and Marianne Dashwood in romantic imagination.  Emma is "charm"-- and "trouble" -- writ large. Sheehan's talk will explore the imaginative and charming "World of Emma Woodhouse."  The lecture will be accompanied by tea and plenty of time for good conversation among those present. No reservations for this event. Theater doors open at 12:30 PM. Come early to get a good seat! In partnership with the Library's Doris' Sunday Matinee film series in the Canyon Theater Room.
