Name: AJ Alkhamees
Hometown: Kuwait City, Kuwait
Major: BS in Architectural Engineering
Year: Senior

A 7 year old with their dad walked into a grocery store in 2007. The dad comes out with a handful of groceries. The 7 year old, AJ Alkhamees, comes out with a 3-1 LEGO Creator Set.

Growing up, I was abnormally obsessed with Legos. It was something that slowly sparked my love for building things with my own creativity, whether with an instruction manual or using my own creativity. It wasn’t until I bought my first LEGO Architecture set that I knew I loved working with buildings.

Living in Kuwait, I would constantly see new high rise buildings being built from the ground up.

“I wonder how that building is supported, given how tall it is?” was one of the first questions I asked myself whenever I drove past the the tallest building in Kuwait. Constantly questioning different design decisions made by the engineers behind those high-rise buildings made me realize my love for architectural engineering.

Having uncles and aunts in medicine and dentistry forced me to think that I needed to follow their footsteps. Following that thought ingrained in me, I realized architectural engineers are doctors and buildings are their patients. Electrical, mechanical and structural are some of the components that make up the bones, flesh and blood of our patient.

Having chosen this major and going into my last two semesters in it made me realize how beautiful building systems really are.

From initially enjoying classes like HVAC Design and Illumination to wanting to seek a minor in energy engineering to further learn more about sustainable building design.

Having visited Boulder for a few weeks whilst on my gap year after high school, I began to notice how ŷڱƵ Boulder is a very welcoming space to those willing to work and try to better themselves academically.

Being one of the only colleges that has an Architectural Engineering program, I took a leap and only applied to ŷڱƵ Boulder. Three years later, I am continuing to take advantage of the opportunities that are available through the Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering. Knowing that I still have a lot to learn, I am completing my undergraduate degree in Architectural Engineering to eventually start and complete a Masters of Science in Building Systems Engineering through CEAE.

As a child, AJ Alkhamees was obsessed with Legos. As he became older, his obsession expanded into a love for building things with his own creativity.

Name: Rebeca Perez
Hometown: Queens, New York
Major: BS in Architectural Engineering
Year: Sophomore

I grew up in Queens, New York and moved to Denver when I was 11 years old. I had never thought about engineering until I was applying for college because as a kid my biggest passion was art. As I progressed throughout high school, I began to realize that I really enjoyed problem solving and being challenged to think critically and that is when I decided to explore my options in engineering.

When I found out about the Architectural Engineering program at ŷڱƵ Boulder I knew I had found the major I wanted to pursue because it was the perfect mix of creativity and applied thinking.

ŷڱƵ Boulder offered the right learning environment and experiences for me and the sense of community that I sought for in college.

I am entering my second year as an architectural engineering student at ŷڱƵ Boulder, and I have experienced so much growth and love within my major already.

The professors and students create an atmosphere that makes you feel equipped to push yourself academically and mentally. I can confidently say I made the right decision making a home here!

"ŷڱƵ Boulder's architectural engineering program is the perfect mix of creativity and applied thinking."

Civil Engineering Seniors Designing New Denver Water Treatment Plant /ceae/2019/03/07/civil-engineering-seniors-designing-new-denver-water-treatment-plant Civil Engineering Seniors Designing New Denver Water Treatment Plant Anonymous (not verified) Thu, 03/07/2019 - 08:48 Tags: News Student News Undergraduate

CEAE undergrads in the Civil Engineering Senior Project Design course are working  to design the new Northwater Treatment Plant (NTP) for Denver Water. These design-build projects are being created by 13 multidisciplinary teams of 6 students who must design and and plan the project. At the end of the semester, they will present the projects as construction bids to Denver Water, with one group’s project being chosen. This class was the subject of a recent Denver Water Tap documenting their NTP site visit.

The NTP will both add to Denver Water’s northern network capacity and replace aging components of the existing Moffat Treatment Plant. The expanded capacity will utilize the additionally capacity of Gross Reservoir to deliver 75 million gallons of treated water per day to the northern part of the Denver Metropolitan Area.

The Senior Project Design course offers all Civil Engineering students a real-world opportunity to implement their knowledge within their chosen specialties before they graduate. Since the project contains water, geotechnical, structural, and construction components, each student will offer a unique set of knowledge and experience to their team. Additionally, it is a great opportunity for students to understand how projects are designed and implemented and learn about their roles as engineers. Finally, students receive the opportunity to receive feedback from both their professors and industry professionals that they can use to improve as engineers and become more attractive employment candidates.

Students recently presented Conceptual Designs for the NTP and will build on these designs and feedback from professors and Denver Water as they work toward their final designs and presentations.

2019 ŷڱƵ WASH Symposium

March 5 & 6, 2019

University of ŷڱƵ Boulder

Registration Now Open!

Dear friends of the CO WASH Symposium,

Registration for your favorite gathering of WASH practitioners, academics, and professionals is now open! As always the symposium is FREE, but we'd like to share a few details you may need to consider when registering:

Lunch  This year lunch will be $10 per day. There will be vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options available.

Parking This year on-campus parking will be $9.00 for one day or $16.00 for two days. If you plan on driving to the symposium, a parking pass is required.

For additional transportation options, lodging, and directions to the building see the Getting Here section of our website.

You can purchase lunch and parking on the registration website or in person, when you arrive, with cash or card.

We are still in the process of reviewing abstracts - we received a record number of submissions this year! Notifications of acceptance will begin going out soon on a rolling basis. If your abstract gets accepted to the symposium, you will still need to register for the event and pay for lunch and parking.

Thank you all so much for your support, we're very excited to see you in March!

Sincerely,

CO WASH Symposium Planning Committee
