Enjoy and cheers!

Jeff YorkÌý 1:04 Ìý
Welcome to Creative distillation, where we distill entrepreneurship research into actionable insights. And it's the spookiest time of the year Brad. It's the Great Pumpkin episode. God. Oh, you love to see it, don't you, bro. Oh, you know, this

BradÌý 1:22 Ìý
is my favorite time of the year. It is. Yeah, it is.

Jeff YorkÌý 1:25 Ìý
I mean, it's the spookiest time of the year. The semester is in full swing. And most importantly, pumpkin beer has hit the liquor stores. Okay,

BradÌý 1:33 Ìý
so this is the one episode chef that I cannot understand for the life.

Jeff YorkÌý 1:37 Ìý
Okay, well, let's introduce ourselves real quick. Sure. I'm Jeff York. I have a new title. Yes, you do. Still the research director for the new title. I'm also the Associate Dean for strategic initiatives. Yeah. Let's dungeon master or in layman's terms, the ask Dean Oh, yes. As you like to say that it's good. We'll give you a little so, so until the people who are

BradÌý 2:04 Ìý
Jeff Hi, I'm Brad Warner. I am an entrepreneur. And I am fortunate though to work with you at the Deming center. So it's great to see you.

Jeff YorkÌý 2:11 Ìý
You're very fortunate to work with me. That's true. If I hadn't had the brilliant vision of bringing this podcast to life, and having this special episode every year,

BradÌý 2:22 Ìý
are we we would be drinking without microphones is what it would be. Yeah, that's right.

Jeff YorkÌý 2:27 Ìý
Yeah, that's true. Oh, we have a special guest.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 2:30 Ìý
Hey, everybody. My name is Ethan Poskanzer. And I'm a assistant professor at the Leeds School of Business at the University of Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ.

BradÌý 2:38 Ìý
And a two time guest on creative distillation. Second time

Jeff YorkÌý 2:41 Ìý
a second. Yeah, we need to do like a board. Like a number of times you can appear on the podcast create a little competition.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 2:49 Ìý
What do you think the record is?

Jeff YorkÌý 2:50 Ìý
We know. Sophie Bach, right. How many times was she?

BradÌý 2:55 Ìý
I think she was five times

Jeff YorkÌý 2:56 Ìý
five times. We actually made her the honorary co host at one point I think

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 3:00 Ìý
actually jacket like Saturday Night Live, you know? Oh, that'd

Jeff YorkÌý 3:03 Ìý
be cool. Yeah, actually be nice. Maybe just as beer stein or a pint glass or something? Yeah, we're trying to design swag. Okay, so before we get down to business, if you're new decree of distillation, welcome. This is the best episode of every season. And you're really lucky to be here because what we're going to do, we're going to taste not one, not two, not three, not even four. Not five, but six pumpkin beers all brewed in Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ.

BradÌý 3:32 Ìý
You know, I think of the Halloween theme and I think of Welcome to hell.

Jeff YorkÌý 3:39 Ìý
That's a bit of a Halloween Scrooge. But we are actually doing this from my gaming lounge in my home. We are surrounded with Halloween paraphernalia. We've got a jacket planner and we've got spiders. We've really set the mood. We've got handles and Brad and I are drinking out of thematic Stein's what talking about your style,

BradÌý 3:58 Ìý
I actually would say call us a chalice

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 4:01 Ìý
just up all year.

Jeff YorkÌý 4:02 Ìý
Yeah. Yeah, pretty much.

BradÌý 4:04 Ìý
Maybe Brad is from his bedroom.

Jeff YorkÌý 4:06 Ìý
Veeam. Most of its here moved around a little to become more prominent now. But most of this stuff's actually alright. So this is where we do our d&d games. Brad has a dragon chalice. I've got a skeleton and chalice. So what we're gonna do is we're gonna taste these pumpkin beers. And then we're going to talk about a new paper Ethan's published but one thing I wanted to I wanted to say, if you're new to the podcast, look, you know, you're gonna love the podcast. You probably all right, love it. Because I mean, you're never gonna drink pumpkin beer. That's

BradÌý 4:34 Ìý
right. Why else would you be here?

Jeff YorkÌý 4:36 Ìý
Why else would you be here? So hit Subscribe on your on your whatever podcast app you're using. If you're using Apple that would be really helpful to us, give us a five star review. We could use the help. Alright, so let's see we have these pumpkin beers in front of us guys. Any anything you want to say looking at the cans or? Well, we'll examine those we have a particular beer you think we should start with

BradÌý 4:57 Ìý
so I'm actually really surprised that I'm very familiar with most of the breweries that you have in front of us and they are great

Jeff YorkÌý 5:03 Ìý
breweries. Yes. And we know that they're great breweries. Why? Because we've done our podcast. No, because they've made pumpkin beer. There's that too. So what I was thinking we would do is we will taste these beers, and we will rank them. And then I have a Brad has brought literature to the bumpkin bureau. This year. I too, have brought literature. I have an article from 50 to 80 magazine this year just came out said the best Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ pumpkin beers to welcome fall with

BradÌý 5:32 Ìý
Yeah, and my article says most pumpkin beers suck.

Jeff YorkÌý 5:37 Ìý
But what year is your article for

BradÌý 5:39 Ìý
1830? To 2016? So it's to

Jeff YorkÌý 5:43 Ìý
that yes, it's dated like this is like we would never pay science it mine is from like, this month, cutting edge.

BradÌý 5:50 Ìý
We were we were talking earlier, Jeff that if you are a bar, and you have a keg of leftover pumpkin beer on the first of November,

Jeff YorkÌý 5:58 Ìý
you're here you got a problem. That's true. So what is beer? Should we Sorry, I was thinking we go in like this order. Well, you guys yeah. All right. So we're going to start with up slopes pumpkin ale upslope is our probably the most local brewery of any of these the one closest to there's actually a if you go on that hiking trail just outside the window. You can get to their northern boulder town, which is great. Then a host of ours great brewery probably makes Brad's favorite beer.

BradÌý 6:23 Ìý
Yeah, for sure. German. Oh, bomber.

Jeff YorkÌý 6:28 Ìý
Oh, we spilled some bark and beer already. Wow. Thankfully, my gaming table is leak resistant. So that, you know if we spill something on these gaskets, or they will keep from leaking down onto the gaming vault that

BradÌý 6:40 Ìý
by the way, and I've told you this many times your gaming table is the coolest gaming table I've ever seen.

Jeff YorkÌý 6:44 Ìý
That's really kind of you man. We haven't opened it up for Ethan so Wormwood gaming table?

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 6:47 Ìý
Yep. The only gaming table I've ever seen, which means

Jeff YorkÌý 6:52 Ìý
you haven't seen the vault. We have to open it up. Yeah, wait till the sink opens. It has like a vault we would do that except for I was spilled pumpkin beer into the vault. So upslope been the host of the podcast, probably more than any other. They're great. They're awesome. Thank you, sir. All right. I didn't give Brad a big sample there. Cheers, everyone. Cheers. Happy Halloween to all. So this says ale brewed with pumpkin and spices. Color. Fantastic. I mean, I think that's what a pumpkin beer should look like.

BradÌý 7:19 Ìý
Taste dark is a different story. So I think it's beautiful. It looks beautiful.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 7:23 Ìý
But the aroma pretty mild. Outside

BradÌý 7:25 Ìý
aroma turns my stomach.

Jeff YorkÌý 7:29 Ìý
What do you think you're a fan of pumpkin beer? Right?

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 7:31 Ìý
I think this one is nice. This feels like a very conservative pumpkin beer. This feels like an amber with a little pumpkin.

Jeff YorkÌý 7:38 Ìý
Right? I just get a little like It tastes you're absolutely I think you're dead on it's like an embryo. It's not overpowering with the pumpkin spice. See if we can learn anything else about it. I think pie pumpkins are often used for brewing pumpkin beer, like because they're sweeter. No more.

BradÌý 7:53 Ìý
So would you guys really go out and buy this? Like if you were at Hazel? I

Jeff YorkÌý 7:57 Ìý
did. They didn't give it to me. But this is this is the torture

BradÌý 8:01 Ìý
episode for me. So I know you would spend a lot of money on that one. But I'm just like on a Wednesday, if we weren't doing a pumpkin podcast, you would actually buy this. Now I'm

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 8:10 Ìý
on I grew up in upstate New York. Yeah, where we really commit to the false name. So you know, we would make an entire weekend out of like, apple cider and pumpkin beers. Oh,

BradÌý 8:21 Ìý
yeah. But Apple Cider but the pumpkin beer and you know, let's go duck hunting and all that cool stuff. All right, man. i This is tough.

Jeff YorkÌý 8:29 Ìý
You got a hard row to hoe in front of you then a long afternoon. So if you're looking for I wouldn't say absolute pumpkin beer pumpkin ale. I would say this is a very good like, example of an approachable pumpkin beer. If you're like Brad and you think you like pumpkin beer? You're not sure.

BradÌý 8:50 Ìý
So that's part of the market must be huge. I think I like pumpkin beer, but I'm not sure

Jeff YorkÌý 8:58 Ìý
the market changes very quickly. No, no, I'm sure.

I've been to a lot of breweries that refuse to make pumpkin beer. Oh, good. I

BradÌý 9:10 Ìý
love those breweries. We should actually put a star next to him on our website. It's

Jeff YorkÌý 9:14 Ìý
a cool can too. It's like bright orange. It's like their traditional. It's a good okay, not much spice though. Not a lot going on.

BradÌý 9:21 Ìý
So have both of you tasted better pumpkin beers to this. Are you saying that this is kind of it. They're playing it safe is what you're telling me?

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 9:27 Ìý
I'd say the streaks still alive. Never had a bad one. Yeah, absolutely.

Jeff YorkÌý 9:30 Ìý
Absolutely. I've never had anything on this. I have had a bad one. I won't say what brewery. Alright, so I mean by default, that's our number one for now. Okay. All right. Next, we're gonna head a little bit out of town here had a little bit away from the mountains. We're gonna have Denver beer company. Hey, pumpkin. But actually it's Hey, Pumpkin. That's what it says right? And this says it is ale brewed with pumpkin and spices

BradÌý 10:07 Ìý
Oh big difference in ingredients between number one and number two

Jeff YorkÌý 10:11 Ìý
says literally ale brewed with pumpkin and spices. But this one has pumpkin spice is added.

BradÌý 10:17 Ìý
I think you're making my points already added my research and I know you guys love research but my research so yeah, for the most important

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 10:26 Ìý
insight what's the thesis?

BradÌý 10:27 Ìý
For the same pumpkin and spices

Jeff YorkÌý 10:30 Ìý
we want to keep our center director, we're happy so give us an actionable insight for your research Brad.

BradÌý 10:36 Ìý
My research is telling me that pumpkin beer is a fad never start a business based around the fact

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 10:42 Ìý
you can have the all pumpkin but why would you do

BradÌý 10:47 Ìý
that all pumpkin brewery I will fly both of you there and we will do an episode.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 10:51 Ìý
Yeah, I wouldn't advise that.

Jeff YorkÌý 10:53 Ìý
That would be a very, very poor decision to start your pumpkin beer. Oh, pumpkin. All right. Can I have this note? You can have a pumpkin beer. Can I have this? Nope. You can have a pumpkin beer. We are gonna have some different styles. Okay, so hey, pumpkin. Denver beer company. Not familiar with this one. We had absolute pumpkin ale last year. It's a perennial favorite. Oh, this one didn't explode out of cans. That's a good thing. Oh, maybe? Oh, wow. Okay, so this one Yeah,

BradÌý 11:25 Ìý
I get it smells like puke.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 11:29 Ìý
Never gonna be invited to just brewery.

Jeff YorkÌý 11:32 Ìý
We haven't crossed him for beer brewery to have our intern guns at it.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 11:38 Ìý
Don't love the can.

Jeff YorkÌý 11:41 Ìý
Just slam in the camp. What don't you like about the candy? Well, it's very orange. Yeah, it's very orange. It has some mountains. I mean, they kind of have an orange mountain theme going here. Well, the smell is way more. Way more. Oh, it's almost like it's good. It's got a stringency to the smell. All right, this is this is not my favorite. I really taste like pumpkin. No, I don't get the pumpkin flavor at all. Do you guys

BradÌý 12:12 Ìý
I would love to see what revenue is for some of these folks who pumpkin pie.

Jeff YorkÌý 12:18 Ìý
charts right. I don't know I it's been an interesting aspect. We should ask Matt. Next time we said how much that was that so I guess it sells I wouldn't do it.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 12:26 Ìý
I'll buy multiple fall samplers when I start to think they're gonna be gone. Right. So I have like a style. Oh,

Jeff YorkÌý 12:33 Ìý
there's definitely a scarcity thing. And if you wait till Halloween to buy your pumpkin beer, you will be sorely disappointed. Yes, it sucks. Yeah, I've had that happen to me. And that's why I never have that happened again, because I stock up. Alright, so So let's talk about the differences between these two. The upslope has a richer or more of an amber ale kind of flavor that sort of lines up nicely behind the pumpkin spice I think. I don't know what's going on with a pumpkin. Even helped me out here. It's

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 12:59 Ìý
a pumpkin or reference or is it just just hey, and then the ingredient?

Jeff YorkÌý 13:05 Ìý
pairs well with family and features? Yeah, this is not my favorite pumpkin beer I've

BradÌý 13:11 Ìý
had I'm thinking about that pumpkin beer and selected applied norms. Right. So I'm going to I'm going

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 13:17 Ìý
to be applied the pumpkin Yes,

Jeff YorkÌý 13:19 Ìý
they have. How would we rank these two, which is the better beer?

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 13:22 Ìý
I'm definitely team upslope.

Jeff YorkÌý 13:24 Ìý
I think I'm with you. Oh, I

BradÌý 13:25 Ìý
mean, if I'm on an island, I'm gonna hope that I drowned.

Jeff YorkÌý 13:32 Ìý
So it was a choice between drinking Hey, pumpkin, or saltwater,

BradÌý 13:36 Ìý
saltwater disc.

Jeff YorkÌý 13:39 Ìý
Indeed, quickly, right. You bet. Yeah. Yeah, I'm not I'm not a fan of that one.

BradÌý 13:43 Ìý
So upslope, that mean, truthfully, the upslope was much better, if you agree. Yeah. But better is a relative term.

Jeff YorkÌý 13:52 Ìý
Definitely better. Yep. So next beer. Let's move on here.

BradÌý 13:56 Ìý
We're going up going to do better. Now. This is a great guy. This is

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 13:58 Ìý
a nice can. I like this. Yeah.

Jeff YorkÌý 14:00 Ìý
So this is a cricket stave, which is a Denver brewery and this is their pumpkin power pumpkin ale. And it has a pumpkin pumpkin. Pumpkin pumpkin. Oh, I'm sorry. Pumpkin power. So you think this is like there's a there's a Jacqueline riding a skateboard. Very punky.

BradÌý 14:18 Ìý
I'm very curious about the ingredients. Jeff.

Jeff YorkÌý 14:20 Ìý
I think these guys have a kind of a Charlie's brown. This is 7% Our last one is a five. Oh, it's ale brewed with pumpkin and spices and spice. Europe becoming an expert. You know what? This is keep cold drink fresh. Cricket stave is a really good brewery. This is where our director of the Deming server pulls the funding.

BradÌý 14:45 Ìý
By the way they make a great pills though.

Jeff YorkÌý 14:48 Ìý
They make a fantastic is so good. They're mostly known for their sour so they're really good brewery. So we got high hopes I've never had this one.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 14:56 Ìý
Where in Denver is this?

Jeff YorkÌý 14:58 Ìý
you know, I don't know. I've never been to The actual brewery perhaps that would be a good place for

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 15:04 Ìý
like little fruit

BradÌý 15:06 Ìý
much better than the first two. Oh wow. Right

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 15:09 Ìý
kind of got like the you're right elements of a sour to it.

Jeff YorkÌý 15:13 Ìý
Well what is that? It's almost like Apple aroma. Man mold dumbstruck by this one.

BradÌý 15:19 Ìý
I don't. You're a beer judge just different. Yeah, this

Jeff YorkÌý 15:22 Ìý
is super different than the other two. It's kind of happily Yeah. I'm getting like a very sweet, almost cidery there are like cider is made out of pumpkin as well. So you like take some apples and you blend it with some pumpkin and you make it up? I

BradÌý 15:36 Ìý
mean, this is really good. Yeah, if you took a gun to my head number three I'm sticking with. Yeah, I'm the first of the first three. You would actually use this. I might actually drink number three. Whoa. No, but if it was the last beer, it's better than the salt.

Jeff YorkÌý 15:51 Ìý
I feel like that's an actual insight

love that. Actual insight is Brad might actually drink pumpkin power by cricket state because

it doesn't taste like pumpkin. Well, it really doesn't. What do you think

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 16:10 Ìý
it gives you like a false feeling though? You know, it fulfills? It could be at the kind of party that pumpkin beer works while at.

Jeff YorkÌý 16:17 Ìý
It's almost like a Munich lager kind of thing. I wonder if it's brewed with? I can't tell is it a nail? You know what it is? It's super clean and doesn't have a lot of the ale yeast like esters and stuff. It just tastes like the pumpkin comes through. But not the pumpkin spice.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 16:34 Ìý
This isn't like a thought that is not going to it's going to kind of a dumb thought. Like some beers. Made with like real ingredients that others feel like they came out of like a giant factory. This one feels like it was made with stuff that I would recognize.

BradÌý 16:51 Ìý
With love Ethan biscuity. Yeah, no, it's,

Jeff YorkÌý 16:56 Ìý
it's really nice. If so if you're if you're wanting to drink pumpkin ale, and you know, be a cool fall person, but you don't really like pumpkin spice or pumpkin beer. This might be the beer for you

BradÌý 17:07 Ìý
without a doubt. I mean, I'm thinking about all the years that I've had to try pumpkin beer with you, Jeff. And this is the only one that I could actually

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 17:13 Ìý
do. If someone's pressing you to order the pumpkin beer, right? This is your safe way out so you can get this

Jeff YorkÌý 17:18 Ìý
just overall I would say this an excellent beer like just it's very well brewed. It's very clean. It's really nice. And that's surprising from from that surprise that a great brewery. So it sounds like is this gonna overtake upslope?

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 17:29 Ìý
This is my first one we don't

Jeff YorkÌý 17:31 Ìý
really know. Well, Ethan's really keen on this.

BradÌý 17:34 Ìý
Is there a category for pumpkin beers at the Great American Beer Fest?

Jeff YorkÌý 17:38 Ìý
Oh, yeah. Well, I think so it might be especially honestly, I don't want to jump. It's in my application. There's a specialty beer category for sure. But I think they break it down into pumpkin beer now but I could be wrong. Okay, so this is number one. Yes, number one. So number one cricket stay pumpkin power overtaking upslope pumpkin ale. I think I actually prefer upslope because I want my pumpkin beer to taste like pumpkin spice and stuff. I kind of want it to have that Starbucks pumpkin latte flavor of artificiality. As you can see, I'm the owner of a box a huge box of pumpkin spice cookies from Costco. I drink a smoothie for breakfast. I'm a real aficionado. I take this very seriously, but I will agree. outvoted two to one. This is our number one follow ups that fall by Hey, pumpkin. All right. Next up, we're coming back. Geographically a little bit from Denver back about halfway between Denver and Boulder with four news is brewing company pump action. Another great brewery, Jeff, another great brewery that we have not actually been to for noses. We were at which one we have been to well provisioned, which is the smell if we really great we need to get back there. We are really I mean, I don't know if you're listening to this and you're in a town that doesn't have a lot of good breweries. You really should come to this. It really isn't a ratable it's kind of ridiculous. The whole Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ Front Range. Like for a while there for about two years when I moved here. I was like, I'm not only not buying beer from the outside from outside Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ. I'm not buying beer from outside of Boulder. And then for a while I've said I'm not buying beer from places I can't walk to. And I still had like too much beer. Anyway, this is a Imperial pumpkin ale is what they call this guy. And it's got a it's a nice orange can it's point 7% Stronger than pumpkin power. So play it a little faster. 7% Yeah, pumpkin pumpkin power 7%.

BradÌý 19:39 Ìý
So I think we're getting the point that the more alcohol the better the pumpkin beer.

Jeff YorkÌý 19:43 Ìý
Well, maybe we'll see. We'll see if your hypothesis holds. What what is those two as your article tell us Brad? How do you fix pumpkin beer?

BradÌý 19:51 Ìý
Pretty much you don't fix it when when we're talking about ingredients of pumpkin and spices.

Jeff YorkÌý 19:57 Ìý
I wish you could see the table breads pumpkin sample are like all full. Well, yeah, pumpkin powers empty.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 20:06 Ìý
Do you like pumpkin pie?

BradÌý 20:07 Ìý
I love it.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 20:08 Ìý
But just not in a liquid form.

BradÌý 20:10 Ìý
I don't like Yeah, it's like putting pumpkin pie in a blender and some beer. That sounds

Jeff YorkÌý 20:13 Ìý
like that was my beer to it. Alright, so this one get way more of the pumpkin spice smell probably even more than up slips I'd say which had been more pumpkin spicy, but also get some alcohol like a room off this you guys. Thank God

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 20:30 Ìý
this is a pumpkin beer.

Jeff YorkÌý 20:34 Ìý
Oh, wow. Okay,

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 20:36 Ìý
this is a beer frogs.

Jeff YorkÌý 20:37 Ìý
This is the most? Yeah, well, well, you guys think? Totally different than what we've had. It's amazing how different they are like you were saying they're all the same.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 20:47 Ìý
Tastes like comments guy got sugar in it.

Jeff YorkÌý 20:49 Ìý
Yeah, it's very sweet.

BradÌý 20:51 Ìý
It's got an aftertaste, though. After taste. Yeah, there's something that lingers. It's not good.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 20:56 Ìý
Let's say you have a hard time over there.

Jeff YorkÌý 20:57 Ìý
I think that is the all spice actually. It's that same flavor or clove. One of the two. It does not say on the candidate. This is ale brewed with pumpkin and spices. I don't think I didn't see it on there as on there. Ethan. i This is an imperial pumpkin. Oh, yes, that means that means Imperial generally denotes a beer that's roughly

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 21:19 Ìý
a pump action. Shotgun. Yeah, pump

Jeff YorkÌý 21:21 Ìý
action. Action does not say the name. It's pump action. Imperial pumpkin. Yeah, for noses. What do you think?

BradÌý 21:28 Ìý
So I can now that Ethan pointed it out. I can taste the clothes and clothes might be the most disgusting spice ever invented? Wow. When I was a kid, I had a piece of ham with a clove in it. And that didn't go down.

Jeff YorkÌý 21:42 Ìý
Alright, so this says pumpkin pie. Autumn spices. Amber malt. I like it.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 21:51 Ìý
This is like a straight down the middle of pumpkin beer for me.

BradÌý 21:54 Ìý
Would you buy this?

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 21:56 Ìý
I would buy this.

Jeff YorkÌý 21:57 Ìý
This is what people usually bring to d&d games.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 21:59 Ìý
More than one at a time. I don't think I can't see myself going back for the second one.

Jeff YorkÌý 22:03 Ìý
It's pretty heavy.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 22:05 Ìý
Maybe two, but not a third.

BradÌý 22:07 Ìý
I took a sip three minutes ago and I still have that taste in my mouth.

Jeff YorkÌý 22:10 Ìý
That's That's great. That's disgusting. committed. committed. It's really good. All right, so now it's gonna get hard. Clearly this is not overtaking pumpkin power for Windows. Does it ever take up so I'm not for me. Not for me either. I think it's better than a pumpkin.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 22:28 Ìý
I was that's where I would put it. I would go do you think Brad?

BradÌý 22:31 Ìý
Put Hey, pumpkin and pump action. Both of them there.

Jeff YorkÌý 22:35 Ìý
I think pump action is significantly better than Hey, hey pumpkin. I drink a lot of for noses pump action because my d&d players no I like pumpkin beer. They usually sit where you guys are and they always bring me lots of the stuff so I favorite d&d player out there I'm an I'm a name check you dug in case you're listening. Doug brings really good whiskey.

BradÌý 22:56 Ìý
There we go. I like Doug.

Jeff YorkÌý 22:57 Ìý
Doug to logical guy you'd like you actually would like to play d&d sometime.

BradÌý 23:01 Ìý
Maybe four noses. Perfect drift is one of my favorites.

Jeff YorkÌý 23:05 Ìý
I mean, oh, four. This is fantastic.

BradÌý 23:07 Ìý
That beer is great. All right. So

Jeff YorkÌý 23:10 Ìý
this this gets my favorite label right off the bat. This is Odyssey Beerworks B E R Werks. I don't know anything about this brewery. And I don't have my glasses. It is a Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ craft beer. I don't know where they're located. But I love absolutely love their label. This is fluffy pumpkin. And this we're getting different toasted marshmallow pumpkin Porter. And it has a jackal banner and like over a cauldron with marshmallows all around it. That just says Halloween.

BradÌý 23:43 Ìý
Fluffy pumpkin. Are you kidding me?

Jeff YorkÌý 23:46 Ìý
This is the most Halloween beer we have. Wow, I've

BradÌý 23:49 Ìý
never heard of this either. limited release. Thank God. Well. Let's see if I could find out way over there from dry dock brewing Aurora.

Jeff YorkÌý 23:59 Ìý
Oh, okay, cool. Well, that's interesting, because all honestly beer works. I guess it's brewed over dry like maybe So this one says deep flavors of spice pumpkin and toasted marshmallow dance with notes of chocolate and graham cracker. Leaving your longing for those fall treats enjoyed around the campfire.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 24:15 Ìý
All right. So at Odyssey Odyssey beer works for going for it. I think it's awesome. I'm skeptical of that flavor combination.

Jeff YorkÌý 24:23 Ìý
I'm excited for it. I am doing this with total bias, which we'll talk about. We talked about heathens paper in a little bit here. Yeah. But I'm willing, I'm thinking this is gonna be fantastic. I'm totally psyched. Well. That's

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 24:35 Ìý
a very different color.

Jeff YorkÌý 24:36 Ìý
I'm hoping that this is great. So I can go buy a bunch of it. Just because I love the labels so much.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 24:42 Ìý
I'm holding this beer about a foot away from my face and whoa, what? I just like having smelling salts.

Jeff YorkÌý 24:51 Ìý
Holy cow. Well, marshmallow in the nose. Big towel. They don't that's a pretty amazing a Cheeto Got a beer that just smells like marshmallow that much? Wow is it is just I don't smell anything but marshmallow. Do you?

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 25:07 Ìý
I feel like this beer punched me in the face?

BradÌý 25:10 Ìý
Well, then a good punch or a bad punch?

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 25:12 Ìý
I don't know.

Jeff YorkÌý 25:16 Ìý
Oh, that'd be really ready to talk about his research in a minute here. So I really like this. I really, really truly do. I'm not just saying that to like, be facetious or anything. It is. So a porter. I mean, you guys know about Porter. Right? I need to explain the history. Porter, for those you that may not be familiar with is like a darker beer. Somewhere in between is an ale. It's not quite as dark as a stout stout will have like what roasted malt in it, so it'll have more of a coffee flavor or a porter will be more like an amber with a little bit of black patent malt or brats roasted malt add to it. That gives it like a roasting nice flavors. Nice heavy. This one's not strong here. Go for it.

BradÌý 25:58 Ìý
It looks like root beer.

Jeff YorkÌý 25:59 Ìý
It does look like root beer. We didn't talk much. By the way. I should have mentioned that pump action was beautiful. That beer was like brilliant orange. It was really nice. This this? Yeah, you're right. But it's like it's not like a stout where it's black and you can't see through it and it's opaque. But it's more like a you know, a dark cola kind of color almost. I really liked this. I think the chocolate notes the poor they usually use chocolate malt really complements the marshmallow nicely and I don't get a pumpkin but there's no

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 26:28 Ìý
pumpkin is. This is the marshmallow beer.

Stefani HÌý 26:30 Ìý
Yes. Well,

Jeff YorkÌý 26:32 Ìý
you can't get in the back end a little. You know, I says tastes I know I'm throwing myself down a Primrose lane here. It tastes a little coolish. Yeah, yeah. You that almost like us. Coca Cola? Yeah. But it's a beer. I would totally drink this.

BradÌý 26:51 Ìý
What is the alcohol level is something like this.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 26:53 Ìý
5.60 So

Jeff YorkÌý 26:55 Ìý
this is the lowest alcohol beer we had.

BradÌý 26:57 Ìý
It's your session pumpkin beer.

Jeff YorkÌý 27:04 Ìý
Like when you mow the grass? Like I need to refresh. Grab me. I'm gonna go grab me a fluffy pumpkin. And, you know, like slam these all night

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 27:14 Ìý
when you're having more than one.

Jeff YorkÌý 27:16 Ìý
Yeah, raking leaves. That's right. Justin Joel. So like if you're raking leaves, and you need to quench that thirst. i Okay. I like this. Now, this is getting harder. Where does this rank gentleman?

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 27:33 Ìý
I don't like marshmallow Pierce, so it's not you obviously brewing? I would not want this.

Jeff YorkÌý 27:43 Ìý
You would drink a pumpkin before this.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 27:45 Ìý
I would take a pumpkin before really?

Jeff YorkÌý 27:46 Ìý
How about you Brad?

BradÌý 27:48 Ìý
Ethan is a really nice person I saw I think it's he's a nice balance on the podcast. I'm I can't drink this. But you couldn't drink a pumpkin either. But the only one I could drink truly I have a beer is pumpkin power.

Jeff YorkÌý 28:03 Ìý
So if you were on a desert island, this is saltwater again. Alright, so Ethan says lore Brad says same same as Yeah. So I'm gonna I'm gonna say these are tied. I actually prefer this to Hey, pumpkin.

BradÌý 28:16 Ìý
Oh, I thought you were gonna put that like at the top of your list. Well,

Jeff YorkÌý 28:19 Ìý
I could but I mean, my vote wouldn't carry it very far. Because you know, there's only three of us

BradÌý 28:23 Ìý
but you would right? I mean, no, I

Jeff YorkÌý 28:25 Ìý
don't. I would put this in front of a pumpkin for sure. I don't think I would put it in front of pump action pumpkin ale nor pumpkin power simply because it's a pumpkin beer episode and there's very little pumpkin. Yes. And that's okay. But it's true it is the lightest but it is a very good beer I mean so I know you guys don't dig it but so if if I say this like there's people listening to our podcast and if that's you please God write to us because that would be awesome. We wouldn't be so you would make my entire year

BradÌý 29:01 Ìý
Imagine if our podcast actually increased pumpkin beer sales

Jeff YorkÌý 29:05 Ìý
that would be amazing. Picture three before hearing this out there and you listen to this and actually make beer purchase is based on what we say are just enjoyed publica please write to us at CD podcast@colorado.edu Or just right to meet Jeffrey dot York at Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ. Edu. I want to talk to you. i If you'd like if you'd like darker beers. If you like marshmallow. If you always have said to yourself, you know geez, I wish I could find a beer that smelled and tasted like a marshmallow. Then this is your beer. It finally happened and I admire because I brewed for a long time and this is an amazing achievement for Odyssey beer works like the great this thing is pretty cool. And it has by far the best. That's the best label. I don't know pump action is pretty cool. All right. It's time for the big boy gentlemen. Wow, that is a big boy. Girl Great Divide pumpkin spice yet Imperial Stout. Oh baby this is stout with coffee and spices Imperial Stout originated supposedly with in Russia. I don't know if I believe that I think that's sort of a mythology but it's meant to be a super strong like winter stamp. So you take like a stout the dark beer, usually a pig made with roasted malt kind of a coffee flavor, and you brew it to roughly double the alcohol like think of a Guinness double those are great in the middle of the winter. Yeah, this is unfortunately here and it's like 85 degrees today. All Welcome to climate change. But anyway, but I will say the colors of border amazing. Wonderful. In Å·ÃÀ¿Ú±¬ÊÓƵ, it really is. This thing's nine and a half percent רV also by far the biggest kin. And now I shall narrate the can

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 30:48 Ìý
how many, like natural lights were the alcohols and I can? How many what natural lights worth of alcohol isn't that good?

Jeff YorkÌý 30:56 Ìý
That would be probably three 390 Lights is no more than that because it's actually more to it's also it's a pint 16 ounces and natty light is 12 ounces. You're the smart and faculty memory then you figure this out.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 31:12 Ìý
4% to 10%. So there's like two and a half beers with a basketball night at least

BradÌý 31:16 Ìý
should have started with that.

Jeff YorkÌý 31:19 Ìý
No, I don't think that we wouldn't have tasted anything else. Like that the point this is important. When the air gets Chris the foilage turns brilliant shades of red and orange. The Yeti yearns for a libation that captures the quintessential flavors of fall, rich and roasty with added layers of decadent sweetness. Pumpkin Spice Yeti is brewed with seasonal spices, and a unique selection of coffee from our friends at Pablos. Coffee pairs perfectly with hayrides pumpkin carving and leaf peepee. If that doesn't warm your soul, you're dead inside.

BradÌý 31:57 Ìý
Okay, well consider me dead.

Jeff YorkÌý 32:00 Ìý
Bread I think on episode 50 Somebody whose podcast we know you're dead. There we go.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 32:07 Ìý
This is very topical with the Bigfoot sighting recently. Around Yeah.

Jeff YorkÌý 32:12 Ìý
Did you see the photos?

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 32:13 Ìý
It looks kind of real.

Jeff YorkÌý 32:14 Ìý
I believe.

BradÌý 32:15 Ìý
I was just gonna say how many idiots? Really? Uh, yeah, at least.

Jeff YorkÌý 32:21 Ìý
It's an interesting dynamic in our friendship. We share many of the same interests, maybe the same values. But I think we diverge around nonsense. I love nonsense. I love stupid Halloween decorations. I love the idea. Someone saw a Yeti. I'm all in on all that stuff. I played Dungeons and Dragons. You are a fax numbers. I am get stuff done kind of.

BradÌý 32:49 Ìý
I think that's talking about a Yeti. It may be the biggest waste of vocabulary that one can do

Jeff YorkÌý 32:55 Ìý
more than our research.

BradÌý 32:58 Ìý
And that's saying a lot that is.

Jeff YorkÌý 33:01 Ìý
Cheers. Beer. So this beer is totally opaque black with a lovely tan head on. And it just smells like coffee.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 33:11 Ìý
This is a good beer that doesn't have any pumpkin in it.

BradÌý 33:14 Ìý
There is no pumpkin in this. I

Jeff YorkÌý 33:15 Ìý
agree. It's a nice coffee stout though. It's good. Yeah, there's a little hint of cinnamon kind of thing going on?

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 33:22 Ìý
A little bit. I mean, does say pumpkin spice not pumpkin. So you know, I guess they only really commit to like nutmeg.

Jeff YorkÌý 33:27 Ìý
It is not ale brewed with pumpkin and spices. I'm tasting coffee. Yeah, it's seriously coffee will be up all night. I will anyway I don't even drink coffee anymore would be a great winter beer. Well, this would be so this is delicious. Kudos to Great Divide this they do a whole Yeti series of Imperial stouts as well as barley wines. Really great brewery down there in Denver. And this can I mean, this can is pretty cool. As Ethan was pointing out, it's got kind of like an orange pumpkin patch in the background. All right, so we got to break this Joel is like saying you guys are so overtime, but we knew we would be we're talking about pumpkin beer. I mean, what could be better? So where do we rank this?

BradÌý 34:05 Ìý
It's not in the same category as the first five that we taste. So this one

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 34:08 Ìý
is tricky, because if you asked me which one do I want another one of you would be the first or second choice. Oh can power but it's not really no. Great device. Okay. It's not really a pumpkin beer. So I feel like it can't wait. Well, that would most but

Jeff YorkÌý 34:22 Ìý
you would put it up there. All right. I think it'd be reasonable in my mind. What do you think Brad? Grads actually drinking?

BradÌý 34:29 Ìý
I actually like the Yeti beer. I think it's great. It's differences, but I don't even see how it's connected to the first five that we tasted.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 34:36 Ìý
Yeah, it's its own thing.

Jeff YorkÌý 34:37 Ìý
Right. I mean, it's It's pumpkin beer, I'd say two or three. All right, would you put below pumpkin power or above?

BradÌý 34:45 Ìý
They are tied for me. I think that they're high preference, but they're, they're both pretty good. I mean, it I think is really good. Just to

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 34:52 Ìý
empower first. Yeah, I could go to this or upslope second.

Jeff YorkÌý 34:56 Ìý
Yeah, I think I think I would do upslope second and then In this just because, you know, I don't get a lot pumpkin out of this guy.

BradÌý 35:04 Ìý
That's the good thing.

Jeff YorkÌý 35:08 Ìý
This delicious that's a benefit. So are we are we satisfied with this final ranking?

BradÌý 35:12 Ìý
Except I would switch up slope?

Jeff YorkÌý 35:15 Ìý
Okay Oh okay, let's do one Yeah. So number one pumpkin beer 2023 Creative distillation pumpkin beer episode. Cricket stay pumpkin power. So congratulation cricket stave. Well, yeah, very Joel's giving him an applause. Okay. So I think I think what the lesson is either there's one or two things we can derive from this

BradÌý 35:45 Ìý
10 things? Well, okay, would

Jeff YorkÌý 35:47 Ìý
you like to offer the first

BradÌý 35:49 Ìý
the first actual insight is skip pumpkin beer go directly to the Yeti.

Jeff YorkÌý 35:58 Ìý
Okay, that's a really scary sound. Sorry. Sorry for listener advice. Right and you it's on the upset. Okay. You have an actual insight from this. Ethan.

Ethan PoskanzerÌý 36:09 Ìý
Don't put marshmallows in beer. Okay, there you go. marshmallows are for a special occasion. Actually, my actual insight is go to upslope up slopes. Great.

Jeff YorkÌý 36:18 Ìý
Yeah, stuff is great. Absolutely is great. I agree. That is a good insight. But I would say good cricket stave as well. Have we been to cricket stave? We have not. We should go. Yeah, I'd love to go there. You should go. Alright, so that's a ranking of pumpkin beers. Thank you very much for joining us if you enjoyed today's episode, or even if you didn't hit five stars on your, your evaluation. So join us next time.
